{Sunday Post} - American Pop, Jack Reacher, and Steal

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Morning, Everyone!

It's been a weird week. A canker sore graced its presence upon me last Sunday afternoon. Then the sinus congestion that I thought was gone came back with a vengeance, causing several sleepless nights. My grandmother's funeral on February 4th was a graveside service in freezing weather. I wore a stocking cap, a face mask, gloves, and a heavy coat, but it wasn't enough to prevent me from getting sick. I'm functional during the daytime, many thanks to sinus medication, but the nights have been difficult for me to get through. I've been taking Theraflu the last few nights, and it's helped me quite a bit.

The Marvel Purge

What is with Marvel pulling all their series off of Netflix? I understand Disney wants all their Marvel universe under one platform, but the Defenders shows are all Netflix originals. Shouldn't they stay on Netflix

I'm lazy when it comes to television shows. I've meant to watch the rest of the Marvel series but have never gotten around to it. Since all the shows are leaving Netflix on March 1st, I'm going binge-watch Jessica Jones season two and three, Daredevil season three, and The Defenders miniseries. If I have time, I'll watch The Punisher series. I care less about Luke Cage and Iron Fist. (FYI - I did watch the first two episodes of Luke Cage when it first debuted, but I didn't like it.)

Candyman Sequels

I had forgotten Candyman: Day of the Dead was getting a Vestron Video Blu-ray release until I stumbled upon it at a Walmart store in a different county. I rented the movie on VHS when it first came out in 1999, and the only thing I remembered from it was that I didn't like it. If you've seen the movie, then you already know why I don't care for it. Nevertheless, I bought the Blu-ray because of the new cover art and a buttload of special features. I watched the movie Thursday night, and, yeah, my opinion hasn't changed.

Hey, at least my Candyman collection is now complete. Right?

Unfortunately, no. For some reason, I never bought Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh. It's weird because I have a soft spot for the second film. I ordered it that night from Amazon, got the Blu-ray on Friday afternoon, and watched it that night. Now my Candyman collection is complete.

What Am I Reading?

My Kindle is currently charging. Once it's finished, I'll be reading Strangers at Collins House by Marilyn Ross (William Ross). The Dark Shadows books are all under 150 pages, so it'll be a quick read for me.

Then I'll begin reading Steal by James Patterson and Howard Roughan. Grand Central Publishing released it on February 8th, but my Walmart didn't get the book in stock until Friday afternoon. Usually, I put a new Patterson book on a shelf to read in the future. That's not the case with Steal. The book is calling my name.

What's in the Mail?

What's the deal with the newest Middle School book? I couldn't find It's a Zoo In Here! in stock anywhere. The local Walmart had a price tag for the book. The book never came in, and Walmart removed the price tag. I ended up ordering the book. Yeah, I know it might seem weird for a 40-year-old reading middle-grade stories, but I don't care what others think. I like reading most of James Patteson's kid's stories because they're fun little reads.

What's New On The Bookshelf?

On Thursday, at a different Walmart with a not-so-big book section. Despite the limited titles, I did get two Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child - Running Blind and The Affair.

On Friday, it dawned on me that Valentine's Day is on Monday. I ran to Dollar Tree and got a card to send to an aunt. She is recovering from surgery. I don't see her often, but I always send her cards on holidays. Anyway, at Dollar Tree, I picked up American Pop by Snowden Wright. It's not my usual read, but the blurb hooked me.

For the first time in my life, I went to a Half Price Books store. I wasn't aware there was one in the city until Friday. My mother wanted to go to JoAnn and convinced me to go with her after telling me about the Half Price Books store. So, I spent Saturday morning bumming around JoAnn, waiting for my mother to decide what fabric she wanted. (It took forever!)

The Half Price Books building looked small on the outside, but the actual inside was much larger than expected. I wasn't in there very long because I had my eyes on one author - Lee Child. I'm on a quest to collect the Jack Reacher books. I ended up getting six books - Personal, Persuader, Worth Dying For, The Sentinel, Past Tense, and The Hard Way. All of them look brand-new except for Persuader. It has creases on the spine, but besides that, it's in good condition.

I should've spent more time looking at other books, but at the time, I couldn't think of any specific titles or authors. Before going there, I had checked the store's inventory on their website for Dune books, but they don't carry any at this specific store. It never dawned on me to look for Star Trek novels.

I tried to look at the bookmarks rack near the checkout counter, but the cashier already rang up my books before I could get a good look. I did see an Annabelle bookmark, the same one I already own. I have two bookmarks preordered from Trends International, so I guess I don't require any more.

    1. There were 32 books, minus the House of Dark Shadows novelization, published from 1966 to 1972. Actress Laura Parker, who played Angelique, published four Dark Shadows novels from 1998 to 2016.

  2. For some reason I have not been able to get into the Marvel shows on Netflix. I wanted to like them since I love the movies, but they just didn't hold my interest for some reason. I've always been kind of bad about watching the shows on there too. I usually just throw regular TV on when I'm working on my computer, I'm not actually "watching" it or paying attention. For some shows I know they require my attention so I don't put them on unless I'm not doing something!

Nice new reads! Those are all new to me ones but I hope you enjoy them all!

    1. The Marvel Netflix shows are grittier than the MCU movies. I like Jessica Jones and Daredevil. I tried to watch Luke Cage but didn't like it. Maybe Disney/Marvel can do more with the characters.

  3. Hope you feel better. I hate how it always seems to be worse at night too, when you most need rest!

I liked the defenders and wish they could have done more with them. I wonder if Disney is going to resurrect any of these shows...

There are Dark Shadows books?? I need to look into this lol.

I believe Charlie Cox, who played Daredevil, had a cameo as Peter Parker's lawyer in the newest Spiderman movie that I haven't seen yet.
