Good Morning, Everyone!
I hope everyone is doing well on the first October Sunday of 2021. I've been sick since Wednesday with a sinus and ear infection. There's still a ringing in my left ear, but it's decreased in the last 24 hours.
Either late Thursday night or early Friday morning, part of the enormous tree in my parents' front yard fell. It covered the driveway, the street, and part of a neighbor's yard. It was an annoying mess to clean up. Because a good portion of the tree landed in the street, the city removed part of it. A man who's working on a neighbor's driveway helped moved the trunk out of the way with an excavator. The rest of it was up to my dad, an uncle, and me to clean up.
What Am I Reading?
I never got around to reading The Noise, besides for two or three chapters that I mentioned in last week's post. I wasn't in the mood to read a James Patterson novel. Yes, I am aware he doesn't write his books. Instead, I read an oldie - The X-Files: Goblins by Charles Grant. I've owned the paperback since 1994, way back when I was in the 8th grade. Despite The X-Files' popularity during the 1990s, there were only a handful of original adult tie-in novels. If my memory serves me correctly, there were only six novels - Goblins, Whirlwind, Ground Zero, Ruins, Anti-bodies, and Skin.
Later in the month, I'll be reviewing all of The X-Files novels, starting with Goblins, which I read a few nights ago. It was a reread for me. I read the book multiple times when I was a teenager. Next, I'll be reading The X-Files: Whirlwind by Charles Grant, followed by the other books in the series. Besides Goblins, I also own paperbacks of Whirlwind and Ruins (2 copies) and a hardcover of Skin. At some point in time, I had lost my Ground Zero and Anti-bodies paperbacks. I remember reading them during my high school years. I bought the Kindle editions a year or two ago for $.99 each.

What's New On the Bookshelf?
Early in the week, when I was feeling better, I had stopped by the local Dollar Tree and picked up three titles I had never seen there before - Gentleman Jack: The Real Anne Lister by Anne Choma, The Hand That Feeds You by A. J. Rich, and Phantoms edited by Marie O'Regan.
Before cutting off my HBO cable package in 2019, I had watched the first two episodes of the series Gentleman Jack. I had forgotten about the series until I ran across this book. I have an HBO Max subscription, so I'll have to finish watching the series.
Phantoms is a horror anthology featuring stories by Joe Hill, Angela Slatter, Alison Littlewood, Mark A. Latham, Paul Tremblay, A.K. Benedict, M.R. Carey, Kelly Armstrong, John Connolly, Gemma Files, Helen Grant, Muriel Gray, Tim Lebbon, Josh Malerman, George Mann, Laura Purcell, Robert Sherman, and Catriona Ward.
Authors Amy Hempel and Jill Ciment wrote The Hand That Feeds You under the pseudonym A. J. Rich. The blurb doesn't give much away, except it involves a woman dating a man who proves to be an imposter.
On the first of every month, Simon and Schuster have between six to ten Star Trek eBooks on sale for $.99 or $.1.99. This month the titles are Star Trek: The Three-Minute Universe by Barbara Paul, Star Trek: The Warth of Khan by Vonda N. McIntyre, Star Trek: TNG: Planet X by Michael Jan Friedman, Star Trek: Ex Machina by Christopher L. Bennett, Star Trek: TNG: Rogue Saucer by John Vornholt, Star Trek: DS9: A Stitch in Time by Andrew J. Robinson, and Star Trek: DS9: The Left Hand of Destiny Book 1 & 2 by J.G. Hertzler and Jeffery Lang, and Star Trek: Voyager: Ghost of a Chance by Mark A. Garland and Charles G. McGraw.
Other new Kindle titles are Alien: The Cold Forge by Alex White, Solo: A Star Wars Story by Mur Lafferty, and In the Dark by Richard Laymon.
Oh man. Glad no one was hurt by the tree or that there was any severe damage. Still must have been a pain though. I know my parents had to remove the front tree in front of their yard a couple of years ago because it was so gall ridden. A lot of the trees in their neighborhood have it and it's only a matter of time before a branch becomes too heavy and falls.

Yikes about the tree! Glad no one was hurt. Sounds like a huge tree. And hope you're feeling better.

Tall trees can be annoying and expensive to remove.
