I'm absolutely the same! As long as it's well-written and the author has an idea of why characters are a certain way or do certain things, I can be on board! Thanks for hosting and have a lovely weekend :)

I 100% agree.
DeleteI'm the same as well. I mean, I don't usually care for the self-absorbed character, but they usually don't end up being anyone important to the story so they don't make any lasting impression.
ReplyDeleteHere's my BBH
Have a GREAT day!

Self-absorbed characters aren't typically the main protagonist. If the main character does start that way by the end of the story, they usually learn a lesson and change their lifestyle.
DeleteI have to admit, I don’t like whiny characters no matter how well-written they are. It’s like nails on a chalk board.
ReplyDeleteI can understand that.
DeleteGenerally it's poor characterisation that has me running for the hills, though in romance there is the overly arrogant male that annoys me. Usually though that is the author mistaking arrogance for alpha dominance.
ReplyDeleteMost of the time, poor characterization goes hand in hand with poor writing. A lot of Harlequin novels tend to have these problems. I'm not saying romance authors are essentially bad writers. Not unless you're writing a long historical epic, many romances are short, and the authors probably had to sacrifice character development because of the word limit set by the publisher.
DeleteI pretty much like the characters in books that I read. Once in awhile I will come across one that is rude that I don't like. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteIf I ever disliked a character, it's because the author intentionally wrote them that way.
