[Review]—"The Mary Shelley Club" by Goldy Moldavsky

I've been reading The Mary Shelley Club by Goldy Moldavsky, which Henry Holt & Company published today, for the past few hours. I've had an ARC on my Kindle for a few weeks, and I'm sorry for releasing this review later than I intended. For some reason, I mixed up my dates.  

Given that Frankenstein is one of my favorite books, The Mary Shelley Club immediately caught my attention. The protagonist of the narrative is Rachel, a disturbed teenager who enrolls at Manchester Prep and joins the Mary Shelley Club, a group unrelated to the English author. It's a covert group where the kids create and execute the spookiest practical jokes. Sounds like safe, enjoyable fun, right? Then the roles get reversed, and the club becomes the prey.

Overall, The Mary Shelley Club was a pleasure to read. It resembles a cross between Are You Afraid of the Dark? and a slasher film from the 1990s, but with a little more drama. Even though I don't know anything about Goldy Moldavsky's prior books, she did a fantastic job of developing a unique horror story with likable characters in this one. There is enough suspense and unexpected turns to keep you turning the pages.┄★★★★✰
