Sunday Post - Black Ambrosia, Grudge Match, and Escape To Witch Mountain

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Morning, Everyone!

There's nothing more shocking than getting a jolt of electricity shot through your body in the middle of the night from an electric blanket! Yep, that's exactly what happened to me on Tuesday night. The odd thing is, I turned the blanket off. Don't worry, I'm feeling just fine. Let's just say, I couldn't go back to sleep that night for obvious reasons. I have unplugged the blanket from the outlet.

What Am I Reading?

Once again, reading wasn't my top priority because of my dry eyes, which, oddly, aren't bothering me as I am typing this post. The only books I read were Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft by Joe Hill and the newest Goosebumps Slappyworld installment by R.L. Stine. I kept my Kindle Unlimited subscription because I want to read the other Locke & Key graphic novels. And there are a few horror titles I would like to read.

I have placed my bookmark inside Robert B. Parker's Grudge Match by Mike Lupica, which Putnam will publish on May 5th. There are 308 pages with 60 chapters and big lettering, so it should be a fast read.

Last, I'm hoping to put a reading dent in the Writers of the Future, Volume 36.

What's In the Mail?

Last month, Valancourt Books had a 50% off sale for two of their Paperbacks from Hell titles - Nightblood by T. Chris Martindale and Black Ambrosia by Elizabeth Engstrom. Normally, the books are $16.99 each, but I got them for $8.50 each with free shipping. The books arrived at the mailbox on Monday.

What's New on the Bookshelf?

Last Monday afternoon, I venture into the actual world and made a stop at the thrift store. I picked up Knight Life by Peter David, Deadline For A Critic by William X. Kienzle, and Last Days of Pompeii by Edward Bulwer-Lytton.

There are several new titles on my Kindle. I don't recall what the exact prices were per book, but they're between $.49 and $2.99. The titles are Robert B. Parker's Buckskin by Robert Knott, Star Trek: Vanguard: Harbinger by David Mack, The Sleeping Beauty Trilogy by Anne Rice, Escape To Witch Mountain by Alexander Key, Pan's Labyrinth: The Labyrinth of the Faun by Guillermo del Toro and Cornelia Funke, The Bedeviled by Thomas Cullinan, The Witch's Vacuum Cleaner and Other Stories by Terry Pratchett, The Shape of Water by Guillermo del Toro and Daniel Krause, Ghost Story by Peter Straub, and Old Order by Jonathan Janz.

  1. I would think that when electric blankets are made that there are some kind of special cords so that fires don't occur. But it's still electricity running through cloth. So that would scare me.

    1. Most new electric blankets have sensors that are supposed to detect overheating and prevent fires. I believe there's a short in the cord and not the actual blanket.

  2. That unexpected jolt would definitely be a shock (wow, that was bad- sorry) but seriously- yes especially if not plugged in, that would be weird! And Escape to Witch Mountain! I loved that movie as a kid!!

    1. The blanket was plugged into the outlet, but the controller was turned off. There's either a short in the cord or a problem with the controller. I believe my right foot was around the area where the cord plugs into the blanket, so I'm guessing that's how I got shocked.

I used to watch Escape to Witch Mountain and Return to Witch Mountain on VHS when I visited my grandparents' house on the weekends during my childhood. I bought both movies on DVD several years ago.

  3. Looks like you grabbed some fun books! I need to use my Kindle Unlimited more, but I do use it about once a month. Happy reading this week!

  5. Omg! I've never heard of someone being shocked by their electric blanket! I'm happy to hear you're okay. That's a really unpleasant way to be woken up. The Sleeping Beauty Trilogy by Anne Rice sounds interesting. Enjoy your books, and hopefully no more "shocking" wake up calls!

    1. The Sleeping Beauty Trilogy are erotic novels written by Anne Rice under the pseudonym of A. N. Roquelaure. Anne published a fourth book a few years ago.

  6. The electric blanket shock must have been a bit scary! I've heard too many horror stories about them to have one but I'd love the extra warmth during winter especially. :(

The Avril Levigne song is awesome. I heard it earlier this week. She looks to much like Lagertha from Vikings here!

  7. That's crazy about the electric blanket! I used to use them all the time and always wondered if something like that would happen - I guess I know the answer! Hopefully you were able to make good use of all those extra hours you accidentally got. You asked on my blog if we were liking City Homicide was any good and I must say we are really enjoying it. It's kind of like Law and Order in intensity and grittiness but without the court part and it takes place in Australia. The first episode or two is a little self conscious - you can tell it's the first few episodes of a new show but after that it settles down. I like the characters and the mysteries are good. Definitely worth giving a try if you have Amazon Prime. Have a great week!
