Sunday Post - Locke & Key, The Turning, and The Kill Society

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Morning, Everyone!

It looks like Missouri will lift the stay-at-home order on May 4th or 5th, but we're still in a state of emergency until June 15th. Probably not the smartest move by Governor Parson, especially with Memorial Day weekend only weeks away. There's no way people will keep to the six-foot rule for that weekend. I am staying at home, where it's safe.

I had ventured out into the real world, wearing a facemask. I hate wearing it, but I don't want to catch anything. I made stops at Walmart, Dollar Tree, the thrift store, and the grocery store. I'm surprised the thrift store was open at all because they're not taking donations until the pandemic is over.

FYI: I updated my "About Me" page. Now it's no longer a mess. I would love to hear what everyone thinks of it.

What Am I Reading?

I didn't feel my best last week because my dry eyes and allergies kicked into gear. The cold, wet weather made everything else worse for me. A migraine hit me for several days and thank goodness it's gone. Then a cold sore formed yesterday.

Reading isn't high on my priority list though, I finished If It Bleeds by Stephen King. I haven't felt like reading any more of Writers of the Future, Volume 36. I don't have a reading plan for this week, but I would like to read the Locke & Key graphic novels on my Kindle before April is over. I got them from Kindle Unlimited and I'm debating whether I should continue my subscription for another month.

What's New on the Bookshelf?

I'm a big Stephen King fan, so I could say no from buying If It Bleeds on hardback. I almost talked myself into getting The House of Kennedy by James Patterson, but at the last second I put the book back before checking out at Walmart. I'm not a history buff, so I didn't want to waste $20 on it. Maybe I'll rethink my decision whenever the title gets released on paperback. Plus, Patterson has a new Women's Murder Club coming out soon and rather spend the $20 on something I'll read.

I picked three hardbacks at Dollar Tree. The Kill Society by Richard Kadrey has a Mad Max-like cover, so I couldn't pass it up. The Return by Joseph Helmreich is a science-fiction thriller. And, last, Tarnished City by Vic James, a fantasy story that I believe is the second installment in a series, though I could be wrong.

There are a few new titles on my Kindle. Grave Humor is a magical comedy by R.J. Balin, and I'll be reviewing it for a tour in May. For another tour, I'll be reviewing Unveiling the Past by Kim Vogel Sawyer. Other new titles are The Tainted Soul by Shaun Hutson & Matt Shaw, The Bank by Bentley Little, The Cats by Nick Sharman, Toplin by Michael McDowell, and H. P. Lovecraft: The Complete Fiction.

  1. I'm not super fond of the masks either but now I'm afraid to go out without one lol! Crazy world we live in all of a sudden. I am concerned some areas may be opening up too soon. I hope it all works out...

Ugh allergies. Hope you're feeling better soonish.

That Mad Mac-ian cover does catch my eye...

    1. Missouri is opening up way too soon. There are now 10 confirmed cases in my small county.

  2. My reading week went about like yours - no much read. :/ I'm hoping this week will go better. I think it's too soon to lift stay-at-home orders too. I think we should all wait until June, or at least until the numbers are much more down. I hope you enjoy your new reads!

    1. I agree. They should keep the stay-at-home orders for at least another month.

  3. I'm still waiting on my cloth masks... I prefer that, as they can be washed at boiling temperature, and I won't have to be outside more than three hours at a time anyway. It just feels like it's more ecologically responsible of me to not get masks that I have to throw out. I might get some of those too, though, when they'll come back to our stores.
I love your new about me page - even if I hadn't read your old one. I think it's funny to see especially the reason why bloggers started blogging, so thanks for sharing that.
Have a good week ahead, stay safe and healthy!

  4. I have not enjoyed the recent works of King. I hope If It Bleeds is better suited for me.

    1. There are four novellas in If It Bleeds, and one of the stories is a spinoff/sequel to the Bill Hodges trilogy (Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers, and End of Watch) and The Outsider.

  5. Interesting book choices. Hope you can find your reading groove again soon :) In Michigan, we're supposed to wear masks, but there isn't really any penalty for those who don't (although I don't think stores have to let them in, since it's supposed to be required). In my county, anyone who works with the public has to. I do. I've got a work mask and a shopping mask. Stay safe!

    1. Where I live in Missouri, all the workers were wearing gloves and masks, but none of the employees at Walmart were wearing them, not even the stockers. I've seen too many shoppers not wearing masks.

  6. The UK government is still in lockdown until 7th May but then there's talk of "gradually easing restrictions" but no one knows what that means yet... It's all a bit of a mess really! All we can do is our best to stay safe and protect others.

    1. The state I reside in will be unlocked on May 4th. Though the nursing homes will still be under lockdown, which means I can't visit my grandmother on Mother's Day.

  7. Honestly, I am listening more than reading right now. I have Locke & Key on audio and really enjoyed the Netflix series. We have masks, but both my husband and I are in the high-risk group for health issues, so we've been wearing since the beginning. Hope this week is good for you :)

    2. Kimberly,

I believe there's an audiobook that I didn't review for one of your campaigns from last year. I was cleaning up the downloads on my laptop and came across "The Unlucky Ones." I apologize for my forgetfulness. I will get it reviewed this week.

  8. I didn't know Locke & Key was on KU! I might have to check that out. I watched the Netflix show and it was pretty good. I wear a mask every time I go out. I have to go to the store about once a week and still get gas since my husband is an essential employee and has to go to work during this whole thing. My grocery store requires that everyone, even guests, wear masks to enter and they have some great social distances practices in place there.
