When you start reading a novel, do you prefer to be plunged right into the action, or do you prefer a slower, more descriptive introduction to the plot and characters?

My Answer: 

 I prefer there to be some kind of "hook" in the first chapter that will instantly intrigue me to continue reading the rest of the novel.

  1. A hook is important I think. The joy of reading is that these are different for everyone though.

  2. I totally agree that a hook is what really catches you but a "hook" can be different for everyone, I think. For myself, hooks are those lengthy descriptions at the start of the book.

  3. I agree with Edel. Every first chapter needs a "hook" of some sort, but it can be different for every reader.

  7. A hook up front is good, but for me, that doesn't necessarily being plunged into action right from the start. I like both. It really depends on the book and what I'm in the mood for.
