Popcorn & Coffee: Doctor Strange Blu-ray Review

PG-13; 115 minutes; Amazon
Available today on Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD from Marvel Studios is the fantasy comic book adventure Doctor Strange. Directed by Scott Derrickson, the film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Mads Mikkelsen, and Tilda Swinton.

Created by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee, Doctor Strange debuted as a comic book supernatural superhero in 1963. The film adaptation stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange, a brilliant (but arrogant) neurosurgeon who loses the use of his hands after a terrible car crash. After having several unsuccessful surgeries to restore the nerves in his hands, Strange travels to Kamar-Ta to seek out the Ancient One (played by Tilda Swinton), who has been known to help others heal from wounds.

Shortly upon arriving, Strange learns that the Ancient One is a powerful sorcerer, who shows him that magic is real, as well as the astral plane and other dimensions. He learns there are are three buildings called the Sanctums (one in New York City, one in London, and one in Hong Kong) that protects the world from the other dimensions.

Under the guidance of the Ancient One and another sorcerer named Mordo (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor), Strange begins his training as a sorcerer, and hopefully he will one day be able to regain control of his hands. Using his photographic memory, he easily learns their ways and starts to gain magical powers, such as bending time with the mystical Eye of Agamotto.

Unfortunately, Strange also learns there are evil sorcerers, lead by Kaecilius (played by Mads Mikkelsen), who are going to destroy the Sanctums and summon Dormammu of the Dark Dimension.

Review - Home to Paradise by Barbara Cameron

Adingdon Press; 288 pages; $14.99; Buy Link; Blog Tour
If you live in the Midwest, it doesn't currently feel like winter, but we're still technically in a winter month; therefore, I'm still including this review as a "Winter Reads" post.

Home to Paradise is the third installment in the Coming Home series by author Barbara Cameron, and as you can see from the cover art, it's an Amish-romance story, which is one of my favorite genres to read.

The novel centers on Rose Anna Zook, a young woman who has always wanted to marry the third Stoltzfus brother, John. However, her dreams of marrying him become in jeopardy when John refuses to leave his Rumschpringe years behind him. He's enjoying living in the Englisch world and has no plans of returning to the Amish community.

My Answer:

It all depends on how the novel is written. Too many narrations can be a bit of a distraction. However, it doesn't bother me when there are two or three different point-of-views in one story.

Q&A with Jo Kessel, author of A Call to Heaven

Now available from J.K.Publishing is the paranormal romance A Call to Heaven by author Jo Kessel.

The author has taken a few minutes out of her busy schedule for a Q&A about her newest novel.

When did you become interested in storytelling?

I’ve loved writing since I was a little girl. I didn’t just enjoy writing stories at school – I was always writing them at home too, letting my imagination run riot. When I became a journalist for my ‘day job’ it was like I wasn’t working at all because I enjoyed it so much. And then a friend of mine in the UK (also a journalist) got a two-book deal with a major publisher from out of nowhere and that made me think: “I wonder if I could do that too?” And so I started to write my first novel…

What was your first book/story published?

Lover in Law was my first published novel and actually, at the moment in both the US and the UK it’s still my bestselling book! I’m hoping that my current release A Call to Heaven will do better still, because this one is definitely the one that’s most special to me.

What inspired you to write A Call to Heaven?

My mother (who sadly died way too young) came to me in a dream a couple of years ago. In that dream she gave me the premise for A Call to Heaven as well as its title. It was the most brilliant and inspiring way to come up with an idea and I really hope I’ve done my Mom proud.

What character in A Call to Heaven is the most/least like you, and in what ways?

I identify with the lead female character Amy in this book, but she really isn’t anything like me. How we’re similar is in our love for our lost mothers and how we’d do anything to be able to speak to them again. Amy’s also a great mom and I like to think that I am too. After that, Amy’s nothing like me. She married a man so odious that I don’t think I could have stayed with him. She’s also a great cook whilst I, by contrast, am woefully incompetent in the kitchen!

What is your favorite part in A Call to Heaven?

DVD Review - Strange Things: 11 Movie Collection

Mill Creek Ent.; 1038 minutes; $14.98; Amazon

Now available on DVD from Mill Creek Entertainment is Strange Things: 11 Movie Collection, featuring eleven weird flicks from the 1980s on three discs.

As you can tell by the title, the release is taking advantage of the critically acclaimed Netflix horror series Stranger Things; though the cover art represents the film Pulse, which is on the first disc in the set.

The films in the set includes:

Pulse (1988; 91 minutes; PG-13) - A forgotten horror gem starring a young Joey Lawrence as a kid who travels to Los Angeles to spend his vacation with his father and stepmother in their suburban home, which happens to be occupied by a vengeful electric pulse.

"Pulse"

Spacehunter: Adventure In The Forbidden Zone (1983; 90 minutes; PG)  - A campy science fiction adventure that was originally released in 3D in the early 80s. The plot, dialogue, and acting is pretty horrible. However, it has some cool sets and costumes.

"Spacehunters: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone"

Krull (1983; 121 minutes; PG) - Considered a flop in 1983, the science fiction fantasy is now considered a cult classic. The plot involves the planet "Krull" being invaded by the "Beast" and it's "Slayers" in a mountain-shape spaceship called the Black Fortress.

"Krull"

My Mom's a Werewolf (1989; 88 minutes; PG) - This horror-comedy became popular when it was aired countless times on Showtime in the early 1990s. The plot involves a housewife turning into a werewolf after having a brief affair.

Review - Justice Delayed by Patricia Bradley

Revell; 352 pages; $15.99; Amazon
Now available in bookstores from Revell (a division of Baker Publishing Group) is the crime thriller Justice Delayed, book one in the Memphis Cold Case series, by author Patricia Bradley.

I have a habit of picking out new books to read just by their cover arts alone, but this isn't the case with Justice Delayed, as I don't think the cover art is very good for it. To me, it looks very bland. The only reason I signed up to review the novel is because I had read a couple other titles by the author in the past.

The novel centers around Andi Hollister, a crime reporter who's sister was murdered eighteen years ago. After a letter surface with evidences that suggests the murderer might be innocent, Andi teams up with Will Kincaide, a detective at the Memphis Cold Case Unit, to seek out the truth.

With the accused murderer's execution date looming just around the corner, Andi and Will race against time to unravel the mystery and track down the real killer.

Q&A with Brenna Zinn, author of Unmasked Secrets

Available today is the romance novel Unmasked Secrets, book two in the Strip Club for Women series, by author Brenna Zinn.

The author has taken a few minutes out of her busy schedule for a Q&A about her newest novel.

When did you become interested in storytelling?

I started as a child telling stories to my younger sister. I remember staying up late at night with her, weaving tales of princesses and fairies. Then, as I matured, my stories evolved to include other subjects. I worked as a training manager in a corporation for twenty years, and often created stories (situational scenarios) to include in part of my classes. In my thirties, I had a hysterectomy and was homebound for six weeks. To help pass the time, I started writing my first novel. I haven’t stopped writing since.

What was your first book/story published?

My first story published was a short story for True Romance Magazine called The Princess Dress. Turns out, the stories in the magazine aren’t exactly true. LOL. But I was so ticked seeing my story in print. I ended up writing several stories for the magazine before contracting with a publishing house.

What inspired you to write Unmasked Secrets?

Fifty Shades of Grey. I have friends who are deep into the BDSM lifestyle (I am not.) When Fifty Shades came out, I overheard many conversations about how the book wasn’t quite accurate. As someone who isn’t in the lifestyle, I wondered what it would be like for two characters who also know little about the lifestyle to dip a toe into that world. One character, my hero, would be a stripper whose stage name is The Dom. My heroine would read erotic books and trying a little BDSM might be something she really wants to do. But I also wanted to educate the readers, just a bit, on what the lifestyle is about. I had several of my friends give me guidance regarding that education. In the end, I think the lack of knowledge/experience of my hero/heroine and the education they receive, made Unmasked Secrets a fun, great read.

What character in Unmasked Secrets is the most/least like you, and in what ways?

Hannah Armstrong is the most like me. She’s a high school principal (something I actually went to college and got a Master’s degree to do), and she’s a bit of a type-A personality. She’s organized, proficient, smart and determined – all traits that I identify with, though I’m not as organized as I used to be.

Review - Seeking Mr. Wrong by Natalie Charles

Pocket Star EBooks; 365 pages; $1.99; Buy Link
Now available from Pocket Star EBooks is the erotic-romantic-comedy Seeking Mr. Wrong by Natalie Charles, which is out just in time for Valentine's Day.

The novel centers on a kindergarten teacher named Lettie Osbourne, who is also the author of a series of children books featuring a character called Sweet Pea. Life hasn't been easy for her ever since her now ex-fiance called off their wedding during the summer; though the breakup wasn't at all her fault, as it turns out her ex is actually gay.

Starting a new school year should be exciting for Lettie, but thanks to a scandal from the former vice principal, the school's funds are on a tight leash by the school board; putting pressure on all the teachers.

Then out of nowhere, she receives notice from her editor that the publishing house has been purchased by another publishing company, which basically means they are dropping the Sweet Pea books. The twist is Lettie is still under contract for one more novel and she must write a novella under the publisher's only genre - erotica.

Yep, erotica! With virtually no love life, there's no possible way Lettie can write a erotic novel. Well, that is until the new vice principal, Eric Clayman, enters her life and helps Lettie to unleash her naughty side.

Q&A with DK Davis, author of Secret: In Wolf Lake

Now available from Books We Love Ltd. is the young adult fantasy Secret: In Wolf Lake, book one in the Secret Series, by author D K Davis.

The author has taken a few minutes out of her busy schedule for a Q&A about her newest novel.

When did you become interested in storytelling?

I was probably in the 5th grade, but got serious about learning the craft in 2004.

What was your first book/story published?

Secret: In Wolf Lake is my first book published under this pseudonym.

What inspired you to write Secret: In Wolf Lake?

My grandchildren. I wanted to write stories for them and share the adventure.

What character in Secret: In Wolf Lake is the most/least like you, and in what ways?

Samantha (a.k.a. Sam) is most like me in that she is a tom-boy and enjoys fishing because that’s what she did with her father. My father taught me the love of fishing, and me being the oldest of four daughters, got to fish with him the most. Like Sam, I also didn’t like attention from others, pretty much keeping to myself after a certain age – definitely not into trends or fashion statements – no girly-girl stuff.

What is your favorite part in Secret: In Wolf Lake?

Wow! I had no idea that the Junie B. Jones series by the late author Barbara Park will celebrate it's 25th anniversary this year. I was a bit too old to read the book series during the 90s; though I have become a June B. Jones fan as an adult. Over the years, I have bought a few of the titles at thrift stores. The books are a delight to read.

Now available to own from Penguin Random House Publishing is the two-disc audio book Junie B. Jones: First Ever Musical Edition!, featuring the audio book First Grader (at last!) and songs from the Junie B. Jones, The Musical.

The 2nd disc features all the songs from the Junie B. Jones, The Musical with lyrics by Marcy Heisler. The musical is adapted from the books Junie B. Jones, First Grader; Junie B. The Dos & Don'ts of Termites in Your Home

What you need to know about termite problems

Probably the most important thing to know about termites is that they can cause a lot of damage to property. It takes a while for this damage to be caused but it does happen. If you want to limit the amount of damage that is done you need to protect your property against infestation by having regular inspections carried out. If an infestation does occur you need to make sure it's dealt with as soon as possible.

We are going to look at some of the signs which indicate the presence of termites. We are also going to take a look at why termite inspections are so important and why you should call the experts as soon as you suspect you have a problem with termites.

How can you tell if there are termites on your property?

It's now always easy to tell if there are termites around. The first time you realise there is an issue could be when the wooden structures in your home begin to sag. This is because termites gnaw on wood from the inside out; so they can eat away all the insides of the wood in your home without you realising it. However, if you look carefully there may be some signs of termites you can spot.

  • Termite tubes which are thin tubes that appear clay-like. Termites can travel down them or store food in them.
  • Termite droppings which look a little like pepper.
  • The sound of soldier termites tapping their heads to tell other termites to follow.

DVD Review - Vice Principals: The Complete First Season

TV-MA; 269 minutes; $19.98; Amazon
Now available on DVD from HBO Home Entertainment is the dark-comedy Vice Principals, featuring all 9 episodes on a 2-disc set. Created by Danny McBride and Jody Hill (co-creators of HBO's Eastbound & Down), the series stars Danny McBride, Walter Goggins (Justified), Kimberly Hebert Gregory, Georgia King, Sheaun McKinney, Busy Philipps, and Shea Whigham.

The series is set around the North Jackson High School, where the current principal (played by Bill Murray) is retiring. The two vice principals, Neil Gamby (played by Danny McBride) and Lee Russell (played Walton Goggins), are both wanting the job as his replacement. Unfortunately, it's not up to the principal to decide who will replace him. Instead, the school board hires college professor Dr. Belinda Brown (played by Kimberly Herbert Gregory) as the principal.

While Gamby and Russell have always been enemies, the two vice principals make an alliance to take down Dr. Belinda Brown, so one of them can become principal.

Throughout the nine episodes, the series focuses mostly on Gamby as he tries to get the new English teacher, Amanda Snodgrass (played by Georgia King), to like him. When he's not at the school, he's butting into his daughter's life (played by Maya G. Love), as he tries to outshine her stepfather, Ray (played by Shea Whigham). My Answer:

I can't think of any romance novels set around Valentine's Day. However, I did like reading the thriller Valentine by Tom Savage. The book was adapted into a horror flick in 2001, but the movie barely resembled the source material. I prefer to read the book over watching the movie.

Q&A with Sarah Mathilde Callaway, author of The Tulip Garden

What inspired you to write a love story?

Since I was a little girl, I’ve always dreamt of writing love stories. That was my only possible destiny. But never would I have dared imagine that I would spend so much of my time so close to the place where the most famous love story of all time unfolded. Every morning, at dawn, I walk by the gate and look at the bronze statue of Juliet, then gaze at her balcony, thinking that love really has no limits.

How do you celebrate Valentine's Day in Verona? What traditions are there surrounding Valentine's Day that are specific to Italy?

The atmosphere in Verona during San Valentino is absolutely unique. Verona is among the most visited European cities during the days of the “Verona in Love” festival, when it truly breathes happiness. It’s amazing to see all the people in love, smiling, it’s something that stays with you for a lifetime.

What advice do you give to someone looking for love this Valentine's Day?

I’d tell them what I’ve told myself throughout my whole life. Love can bring you many shadows, and lead you to very dark places, but you have to keep on shining. This is why I enjoy dressing in bright clothes so I can shine!

What sort of response have you had to your book from the Italian readers?

I don’t really worry that much about what my readers think of my novels. Of course, it’s very gratifying when they write to me to say that they spent the whole night reading my novel, unable to put it down. However, I feel my destiny is not to sit around waiting for people to judge my writing, but to keep building something greater instead.

Why do you think your book would make a romantic and thoughtful gift for your loved one this Valentine's Day?

This will actually become a reality on Valentine’s Day in Italy since the “Verona in Love” Festival will be gifting novels by Sarah Mathilde Callaway to some of its thousands of international visitors. The English version of The Tulip Garden will be released in paperback on that day, so it will be the perfect gift: like a delicate flower, but passionate, thoughtful and bright, like the book’s cover. The day the English translator received my novel, she also got a bouquet of tulips as a present from a friend. Her friend knew nothing about my book so my translator saw this as destiny.

What's the formula for a successful romantic novel?
