Fall Reads: God Bless Us Every One

Abingdon Press; 200 pages; $14.99; Buy Link; Blog Tour

There's still 109 days till Christmas Day. However, I spent my morning reading a Christmas-themed book this morning while I sipped on a cup of coffee. (FYI - Today's my birthday!)

What the title of the book?

Well, the book is called God Bless Us Every One and it's written by Eva Marie Everson, which is basically a modern day spin on the Charles Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol."

The novella centers on a twenty-seven-year old named Charlene "Charlie" Dixon who is fired just a few days before Thanksgiving as the the activities director at an all-girls school in Florida.

Yeah, it's a great way to start the holidays!

Charlie packs her bags and heads back home to Testament, North Carolina to spend the holidays with her grandmother, who she calls "Sis." Her mother abandoned her at a young age and her father has been in and out of a jail, so her grandmother had to raise her.

Despite Charlie's "Bah, humbug!" attitude, she finds herself working on the local school's Christmas play, A Christmas Carol, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that her old childhood crush, Dustin Kennedy, is the drama teacher.

Final Thoughts: God Bless Us Every One is a quick little read at only 200 pages. Normally, I'm not even close to having the Christmas Spirit in September, but after watching Bless All the Dear Children (Little House on the Prairie Christmas movie) on Labor Day, I guess I was somewhat in the mood for a holiday-themed read.

I would like to point out that A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is one of my favorite books! I still own the paperback reprint that I received as a Christmas present when I was a little kid. It's actually the first eBook that I downloaded to my Kindle (my first Kindle). So reading a book that has a "Christmas Carol" theme gets extra points from me.

Like I already mentioned, this novella is only 200 pages, so the authors wastes no time introducing the main character, Charlie, who has already lost her job as the first chapter begins. I liked the character from the get-go, as well as her grandmother "Sis." The plot flows less like a book and more like one of those made-for-Hallmark Christmas movies, but less cheesy.

Overall, God Bless Us Every One is a cute, fast-paced Christmas tale that I enjoyed reading.
