I almost passed on reading Barefoot Summer. At first glance at the cover, I didn't think this would be a great read for me, but then I remembered reading The Big Sky Romance Series by the author, so I decided to sign up to review it, which I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
For over ten years, Madison McKinley has been grieving the drowning of her twin brother. Her loving family and friends have tried to help her cope with her loss, but she can't seem to put things behind her and move on. She occupies her days as a veterinarian in her riverside town, but her brother's death still haunts her.
The town's annual regatta is approaching and Madison plans on entering the race as it was her brother's dream to win it. Sounds easy, right?
It would be if Madison actually knew how to swim and sail. She has a major fear of water!
Her only hope may be Beckett O'Reilly, whom she fondly remembers as a troublemaker teenager back in high school. She despises him with a passion, but he is her only hope to win the race. To her surprise, she quickly falls for him, but his dark secret may put a rift between them.
Surprisingly, I found myself enjoying every page of Barefoot Summer. Denise Hunter keeps getting better with every new book she writes. The plot is realistic and the characters are likeable. Barefoot Summer is the perfect book to read this summer.
Denise lives in Indiana with her husband Kevin and their three sons. In 1996, Denise began her first book, a Christian romance novel, writing while her children napped. Two years later it was published, and she's been writing ever since. This genre is not my usual read but it sometimes it's good to read something you're not usually read. I'm reading something similar with this book at the moment and really enjoyed it. =)
