Review: LEGO Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out DVD

There has been lots of excitement in the Star Wars universe since the announcement of the upcoming new sequel trilogy. I'm sure fans are excited about the LEGO Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out arriving on DVD. The twenty-two-minutes cartoon special aired on the Cartoon Network last year and is now out just in time for Easter.

I'm a fan of the original trilogy, but I missed out when the special aired on television and along with the prequel, The Padawan Menace. LEGO has been releasing Star Wars toys for years, so it was just a matter of time before an animated project was released.

The Empire Strikes Out takes place directly after Luke Skywalker blows up the Death Star. He continues his quest, along with R2-D2, to stop the Empire's next move, but he is side barred by a swarm of female fans that call him the Death-Star-Blower-Upper. Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa are building up an army of Gungan Warrior, while C-3PO is stuck with Chewbacca on the Millennium Falcon.

On an Imperial Star Destroyer, the Emperor plans on building a new Death Star from a model kit with his son, Darth Maul, which upsets Darth Vader. The two Darths battles it out with a saber fight, leading Darth Vader to take off in a TIE Fighter, where he bumps into Luke Skywalker in an X-Wing Starfighter.

To save the galaxy from another Death Star, Luke Skywalker must outwit the Empire and avoid his crazy fans.

I've never seen a LEGO cartoon before, but I was impressed with the detailed animated effects. Despite its short running time, it covers basically every from the Empire Strikes Back, but in a humorous way that both children and adults will laugh at. The dialogue is cleverly written, with a few inside jokes that only Star Wars fans will understand. I like the fact that Dark Maul had something to do with the plot, considering he is from the first prequel movie. The DVD comes with a Darth Vader LEGO toy with a removable helmet, which any Star Wars fan would love to collect. My rating for The Empire Strikes Out is 4 out of 5 because of the lack of extras. With the twenty-two-minutes running time, I would have thought there would have been a few special features, but there was nothing. Overall, The Empire Strikes Out is a well written spoof with great animation.
