Pumpkin Madness by Melissa Stagi-Zepeda

Pumpkin Madness

by Melissa Stagi-Zepeda

Year after year,

the pumpkins lived in fear.

Slicing, maiming, wrenching their guts,

I never considered them while I made cuts.

This year, raging gourds, an orange mad herd.

They ate the kid that looked like a bird.

Blood stained the sidewalk, splattered with brain,

I'll never look at a pumpkin the same way again.
