It’s Prom Season

It’s the end of the school year, and for some, prom has already come and gone, and for others, it’s right around the corner. Either way, I’ve been cracking up at the things some guys, and even girls, go through to ask their dates to prom.

When I was in high school, it was simple. If you had a boyfriend, it went something like this: boyfriend grunts out, “So, we gonna go to prom or what?” Or the girl would take control and say, “We’re going to prom, right?”

But what if you didn’t have a boyfriend or a girlfriend? Well, then you were screwed. No, just kidding. For my friends who weren’t coupled up, we worked it for them. “Hey, you two go together, and you go with him, he can take you,” and we were all set. One big happy prom full of tight dresses, the strong scent of hairspray, and itchy corsages.

Those were the good ole days. Now, things have gotten way more complicated. Gone are the days when you could just walk up to a girl and say, “Will you go to prom with me?” In the last month, leading up to prom, I’ve seen a lot of different proposals.

First, some girl came into my class and asked if she could leave a brownie and a “clue” card for one of my students (FYI: teaching is my day job). She brought it in before school so I was tortured by this moist chocolate dessert the entire day before the guy walked in sixth period to claim his surprise. He had been given a treat and a clue in each of his classes, leading him to the finale where his girlfriend met him to propose an invitation to prom. He, of course, said yes and they went and had a good time.

Many students asked their potential dates with giant chocolate chip cookies iced with: “Will you go to prom with me?” There seems to be a theme. Give sweets, get a date. Haha. That would’ve totally worked on me.

One guy asked his friend with a humungous poster. When she walked out of class, she was stopped with a poster, which had to be held by several people. It read: “___, will you go to prom with ___?” It was super cute. I know the kids well and I almost jumped up and down, and squealed, it was so exciting.

Recently, I just heard a proposal on the radio. If you really want to be different, and you’re persistent, you can always call a radio station to ask someone to prom on air. Good thinking. Like someone is going to say no with the world listening. Ryan Seacrest is offering his prom asking services on his morning radio show. He even hooks up some of his listeners with prom dresses, tuxedos, and a dinner.

Unlike Meg, in So I’m a Double Threat, I had an amazing prom. I had a blast dancing, going to Hooters (of all places) for dinner, and hanging out with my friends. Then, on the way home, we came across a naked man walking around his front yard. Just after midnight, an old guy stumbling along, swaying in the wind. How’s that for a visual? Even now, close to twenty years later, my date and I still remember it like it was yesterday. LOL!

Anyway, what are your “Prom Proposal” stories? Did your date do something special? Creative? Out of the ordinary? And how about the prom? Anything weird happen?
