Sunday Post: December 9, 2018

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @  Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Morning, Everyone!

My Current Reads!

It's been a really stressful week for me. My 77-year-old grandmother fell and fractured her hip; resulting with her being sent to a hospital in the city, where she had surgery. She's supposed to be transferred to the local hospital sometime tomorrow, where she will start rehabilitation therapy for three weeks. I'm doubtful if she'll ever be allowed to go home, she's showing signs of dementia.

I haven't had any free time to read. Books on my agenda this week are: The Making of Mrs. Hale by Carolyn Miler and Mind Games by Nancy Mehl. And, yes, I'm still reading American Mirror: The Life and Art of Normal Rockwell.

Blu-ray Review: Gridiron Gang: Special Edition

Mill Creek Entertainment; Amazon
Since it is "football Sunday," I thought it would be the perfect time for me to review the Gridiron Gang: Special Edition Blu-ray (PG-13; 125 minutes; $14.98), which was released a few months ago by Mill Creek Entertainment.

Directed by Phil Joanou, the 2006 drama told the true story of the Kilpatrick Mustangs 1990 football season. Dwayne Johnson plays juvenile probation officer Sean Porter who works at the Kilpatrick Detention Center in Los Angeles. He created a football team called the Kilpatrick Mustangs to help the troubled kids at the center learn about responsibility, discipline, and team work.

Getting the kids to work together isn't an easy thing to accomplish as there's a mixture of former gang members on the team who don't trust each other. Thanks to Porter's leadership, he leads the team to the playoffs.

Special Features include:
  • The Original 1992 Emmy Award Winning Documentary Gridiron Gang
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Commentary with the Writer and Director
  • Gridiron Gang Football Training
  • Phil Joanou Profile
  • The Rock Takes the Field

Blu-ray Review: Charles Bronson: 4 Movie Collection

Long before Liam Neeson became known as the old-guy action-guy, Charles Bronson owned that role, many thanks to the Death Wish films and many other revenge flicks from the 1970s and 1980s.

Recently, Mill Creek Entertainment released the Charles Bronson: 4 Movie Collection on a two-disc Blu-ray set. Those four movies are:

The Valachi Papers (1972; PG; 126 minutes) - Directed by Terence Young and based on the book of the same name by by Peter Maas, the film tells the true story of Joe Valachi (played by Charles Bronson), a former "button man" who becomes an informant after a Mafia crime boss gives him the kiss of death.

Jay's wife Ann (played by Jill Ireland) hires Texas Bush pilot Nick Colton (played by Charles Bronson) and his partner Hawk (played by Randy Quaid) to break her husband out of prison.

Hard Times (1975; PG; 94 minutes) - Directed by Walter Hill and set during the Great Depression, the film centers around a a drifter freighthopping named Chaney (played by Charles Bronson) who becomes a bare-knuckle fighter after meeting promoter Speed (played by James Coburn).

Blu-ray Review: John Travolta: 4 in 1 Collection

Mill Creek Entertainment; Amazon

What every happened to John Travolta?

The last movie I saw the actor star in a movie was the comedy Wild Hogs and it wasn't very good. Nevertheless, most of his films are now available on Blu-ray, including Perfect, Basic, A Love Song For Bobby Long, and Lonely Hearts which were recently released on a two-disc 4 in 1 Collection set ($14.98) from Mill Creek Entertainment.

Perfect (1985; R; 120 minutes) - Directed by James Bridges, the romantic drama centered on Rolling Stone magazine reporter Adam Lawrence (played by John Travolta) traveling to Los Angeles to write an article about "single bars of the '80s," which leads him to investigate a popular health club. This is where he meets workout instructor Jessie Wilson (played by Jamie Lee Curtis). There's an instant connection between them and they quickly fall in love, but their relationship is put to the test when he must stretch the truth for his article.

Basic (2003; R; 99 minutes) - Directed by John McTiernan, John Travolta plays DEA agent Tom Hardy, a former Ranger who teams up with Military Police investigator Captain Julia Osborne (played by Connie Nielsen) to investigate the disappearance of Master Sergeant Nathan West (played by Samuel L. Jackson) and a small group of Army Rangers.

A Love Song For Bobby Long (2004; R; 121 minutes) - Directed by Shainee Gabel and based on the novel Off Magazine Street by Ronald Everett Capps, the drama centers around Purslane Will (played by Scarlett Johansson, a teenager who travels to New Orleans to find two strangers, Bobby Long Played by John Travolta) and Lawson Pines (played by Gabriela Macht), living in her deceased mother's home.

Lonely Hearts (2006; R; 108 minutes) - Directed by Todd Robinson, the film tells the true story of the serial couple Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez (played by Salma Hayek and Jared Leto). After meeting through a personal ad in a magazine, the couple go on a killing spree; preying on lonely, rich women. Hot in pursuit are homicide detectives Elmer C. Robinson and Charles Hildebrandt (played by James Gandolfini), who are determined to capture them.

DVD Review: The Lady Musketeer

Mill Creek Entertainment; Amazon

Probably almost everyone has heard of The Three Musketeers. And, no, I'm not referring to the candy bar. I'm talking about the 1844 novel of the same name by Alexandre Dumas père, which has spawned over twenty film adaptations and thirteen animated adaptations.

My favorite Three Musketeer movie is the 1973 film directed by Richard Lester and starred Oliver Reed, Frank Finlay, Richard Chamberlain, and Michael York. Two sequels, The Fourth Musketeer and The Return of the Musketeers, were later made. Michael York played Jacques d'Artagnan in those three films and would later reprise the character for the 2004 miniseries The Lady Musketeer (La Femme Musketeer), which was released to DVD + Digital from Mill Creek Entertainment earlier this year.

Directed by Steve Boyum, the film centers around
Valentine D'Artagnan, Jacques' daughter, traveling to Paris to become a musketeer. Thanks to an introduction letter written by her father, she is easily accepted as a new recruit by Commander Finot (played Roy Dotrice). However, due to her gender, the original three musketeer son's (Etienne Aramis, Antoine Porthos, and Gaston Athos) aren't as accepting.

A woman has never been titled a "swordsman," so Valentine must prove to everyone that she is just as good as her father.

Midnight Horror Review: Season of the Witch

Rated R; 89 minutes; AMAZON
Despite the fact that I have an Amazon Prime subscription, I hardly watch any of the movies or television series included with the service. I didn't realize until tonight that there were so many older horror flicks on there. Not being able to sleep and with nothing else to do, I decided to watch 1972's Season of the Witch.

Directed by the late great George A. Romero, the film is a weird horror drama centering around a bored suburban housewife named Joan Mitchell (played by Jan White). She has an abusive, controlling, workaholic husband, Jack (played by Bill Thunhurs). Their daughter,  Nikki (played by Joedda McClain), is a nineteen-year-old college student, who no longer has any need for Joan, besides for room & board. Joan has strange recurring nightmares that her psychotherapist believes is caused by her husband.

After meeting Marion Hamilton (played by Virginia Greenwald), a new neighbor who claims to be a witch, Joan becomes interested in learning about witchcraft. She buys a book full of spells and casts a spell to make her daughter's lover, Gregg (played Raymond Laine), sleep with her.

As Joan continues to casts spells, she starts having nightmares about being attacked by a man wearing a Satanic mask, which ultimately leads to her fulfilling her own dark destiny.
