The Little Mermaid is based on the classic Danish tale by Hans Christian Andersen and is about a sixteen-year-old mermaid named Ariel, who dreams of being human. Along with her best-friend Flounder, she collects human artifacts that she finds on the ocean floor, as she is curious about the world above the sea. Her father King Triton and his adviser Sebastian have told her dozens of times that it is illegal for mermaids and humans to make contact.
Despite King Triton's objections, Ariel, Flounder, and an unwilling Sebastian, get close to a sailing ship to watch the birthday celebrations of Prince Eric, which Ariel develops a crush on the human prince. Suddenly, a deadly storm causes chaos and Prince Eric is thrown into the water. Arial rushes to rescue him from drowning. The only thing Eric remembers about his rescuer was her beautiful voice.
