Hello, fellow Friday 56ers!
This week, I'm featuring You with the Sad Eyes: A Memoir by Christina Applegate. I tried my best to obtain a review copy but was unsuccessful. I briefly considered ordering a copy, but luckily, I found it at a Walmart in a neighboring county that actually stocks its bookshelves. Note: I live in a small town with no actual bookstores, but there's a Walmart that has unfortunately downsized its already limited book section by half and then failed to restock it.
Anyway, like many others, I'm a fan of Married with Children and wanted to read Christina's memoir. I've read exactly 56 pages so far, and it's profoundly sad—not only because of the multiple sclerosis that has impacted her life, but also due to her troubled and traumatic childhood. It’s truly haunting.
Now, here’s a tease from page 56:
There he was, bleached blond hair, missing teeth, a brown button-down shirt over a T-shirt. Literally my breath was taken away. It's my punk rock God, I thought. It's my punk rock fantasy.
— Applegate, Christina. You with the Sad Eyes: A Memoir, Little, Brown, and Company, 2026, p. 56.

I feel sad just reading short take on the book. Glad you found it. I lived for over ten years in a book desert and hated not having a book store to go and snoop around in every once in a while. Sorry to hear that is your life right now.
ReplyDeleteIt’s frustrating when a chain of big box stores puts local businesses, like bookstores, out of business, only to then downsize sections of their own stores for various reasons. In my county, the so-called "superstore" is the only option available, but it doesn’t carry much variety; even the recently remodeled grocery section has been downsized. Interestingly, there’s a smaller, older Walmart to the south that has a decent-sized book section that's usually well-stocked. Unfortunately, I only go in that direction a few times a year.
DeleteLiving in a "book desert" is tough! While thrifting is an option, there’s now only one store left since several others closed last month. The only furniture store in town is also having a closing sale after selling its building. At this rate, my town seems destined to become a ghost town.
I do have Dollar Tree and Dollar General, but neither of them stocks books anymore. You would think that after the mass-market book elimination last year, Dollar Stores would have received a slew of warehouse titles, but that hasn’t happened. I guess I’ll have to stick with ordering online for new books, but the mail has been really slow this year... but that’s a story for another time.
I'm glad you were able to find a copy! Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by!
