My Answer:
I don’t have any kids, so I might not be the best person to answer this week’s question. But I do have many younger cousins. Some of them have gone through their teenage years like unprepared sailors facing a storm. Surprisingly, some don’t even know how to write in cursive. Cursive used to be a valued skill, found in birthday cards and report cards. Now, schools have changed so much that teaching cursive seems like a lost tradition, something only our grandparents remember, like an old ghost story told on a chilly Halloween night.

It’s quite frustrating. We should all know how to sign our names with style. I remember my grandmother teaching me to write my name in beautiful, flowing letters before I even started second grade. I was barely eight, but she thought it was important, like teaching me to ride a bike or use a fork correctly.

As for literature and reading, I feel completely lost. I can’t even imagine what kids are learning today. So, maybe I’m not the right person to guide this week’s discussion about words. I’ll leave it to those who are more involved in teaching. They might have the answers I’m looking for. ⁓B.J. Burgess
