My Answer:

I don't consider my reads as "preferred genres." I read a variety of genres. My current likes are mysteries, military thrillers, horror, Westerns, and Star Trek. I've ventured into other genres, some because I heard buzz about them, others because either the cover or blurb appealed to me. If a book is well-written and has a likable protagonist, the odds of me liking it are higher. So, no, I'm never surprised that I enjoyed reading a book outside my preferred genres.
