The biblical action drama THE CARPENTER (PG-13 for violence; 113 minutes), produced, co-written, and directed by Garrett Batty, is currently in theaters from Three Coin Productions and Boomtown Films.
THE CARPENTER is a powerful story of transformation and redemption. The film, set in biblical times, follows the life-changing journey of an adopted Viking orphan who becomes a carpenter's apprentice to none other than Jesus Christ. Through the timeless craft of carpentry, he finds a path to compassion and redemption.
The story revolves around Oren (played by Kameron Krebs), a Viking orphan who, as an adult, engages in fighting as a side hustle. His experience training as a carpenter under Jesus's mentorship ultimately leads him to change his lifestyle for the better. The cast includes Kameron Krebs (co-writer), Kaulin Krebs (co-writer), Andre Jacobs, Aurora Florence, and Jeff Dickamore.

As the credits for THE CARPENTER rolled, I felt confused about what I had just witnessed. The film, set in Nazareth in 29 A.D., combines music, fight sequences, and carpentry in an action-packed narrative. The filmmakers aimed to create a Spartacus-style movie but with a PG-13 rating, borrowing elements from Rocky, Kickboxer, and Bloodsport, albeit on a smaller budget.
While marketed as a Christian film, it falls short of that goal. One of the central themes involves making money through violence. Although the protagonist ultimately transforms his life thanks to his friendship with Jesus Christ, I never felt that the film effectively communicated a Christian message.
Overall, THE CARPENTER is a low-budget MMA-inspired action film set against a biblical backdrop. It offers entertainment at times, but it strays far from historical accuracy, especially with the modern-day musical score. At best, THE CARPENTER is a B-level film and feels about thirty minutes too long for my taste. ╌★★★✰✰
