{Sunday Post} — Foregone, Rising Tiger, and Saturn's Child

The Caffeinated Book Reviewer's Kimberly hosts a weekly meme called "The Sunday Post"!

* Weekly Tidbits *

  • I must've caught a flu bug somewhere because I've been sick since Saturday night. Hopefully, it's just a 24-hour bug because I need to get caught up on some blogging.

What Am I Currently Reading?

I haven't had a whole lot of time for reading. I'm on page 12 or 13 of Indiana Jones and the Army of the Dead by Steve Perry. Whenever I finish it, I'll move on to Star Wars: The Last Jedi by Michael Reaves and Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff. Then I'll read My Heart Will Find You by Jude Deveraux.

What's New on the Shelf?

I picked up Simply Lies by David Baldacci and Rising Tiger by Brad Thor at Walmart. It's the first time I've bought a book by either author at a regular price.

Typically, I visit the local thrift store on Mondays, and this past week I found a few books, including Saturn's Child. It's a library copy with a clear plastic covering over the dust jacket, and it was filthy when I came across it, with dirt and God knows what covering the front, back, and fore-edges. The name "Casey" had been written on the front cover with a black marker. It's not noticeable in the above photo because I cleaned the book to the best I could; I even removed "Casey" from the cover. At some point, this book has either been left in the rain or dropped in water because there are warped or water-damaged pages, but all the pages are intact and readable. Inside the book, hidden behind the front jacket flap, was a folded "Receipt for Lost or Damaged Material." The receipt is dated 8-18-01 and has the patron's name, address, and library card number written on it. No, Casey isn't the patron, but the woman who damaged the book had to pay $21.95.

If anyone's wondering why I wanted the book, here's the reason—it's written by Nichelle Nichols, the late actress who played Uhura in Star Trek: The Original Series and its sequel films, and the late Star Trek author Margaret Wander Bonanno.

The other three thrift store books are Dreamcatcher by Stephen King, The Book of the Dead by Douglas Preston, and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Now I have several different editions of Frankenstein, and this one has an odd cover that has nothing to do with the story.

I picked up three books at Dollar Tree: Raft of Stars by Andrew L. Graff, Foregone by Russell Banks, and Out of Time by David Klass.

Five of May's 99-cent Star Trek books are already on sale on Kindle, and since I didn't own any of them, I had to get them. The titles are Star Trek: DS9: Mission Gamma: Twilight by David R. George III, Star Trek: DS9: Mission Gamma: This Gray Spirit by Heather Jarman, Star Trek: DS9: Mission Gamma: Cathedral by Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels, Star Trek: DS9: Mission Gamma: Lesser Evil by Robert Simpson, and Star Trek: Into Darkness by Alan Dean Foster. Also, last Sunday, I added Without Remorse by Tom Clancy to my Kindle for $1.99.

  1. I haven't read a Star Wars book in ages. I did like Star wars Heir to the Jedi by Kevin Hearne...

    I've been watching Star trek: TOS again...
