[Blu-ray Review]—"Ticket to Paradise" is a Predictable but Enjoyable Romantic Comedy

Is there anybody else who misses clichéd romance comedies? The genre appears to have gone out in the early 2000s and was briefly supplanted by vulgar comedies, which vanished when the big-budget superhero movies took over the box office. I was pleasantly delighted when Universal Pictures released the teaser for "Ticket to Paradise," starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts, earlier this year. Even though the trailer gave away the whole storyline, the movie seemed like a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I did not get the opportunity to watch the picture during its brief theatrical run; however, I received an advance copy of the Blu-ray (+ DVD + Digital) release, which is now available in stores, along with a separate DVD release. The film is also available for digital purchase and streaming on Peacock

Daniel Pipski and director Oil Parker co-wrote the script. The film focuses on divorcees David and Georgia Cotton (George Clooney and Julie Roberts), who learn through email that their daughter Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) is marrying Gede (Maxime Bouttier), a man she just met 37 days ago while on vacation in Bali with her best friend Wren (Billie Lourd). David and Georgia immediately board a plane flown by her considerably younger French boyfriend, Paul (Lucas Bravo), to prevent their lovestruck daughter from making the same mistake they did twenty years earlier.

Bonus Features on the Blu-ray, DVD and Digital are:

  • Return of the Dynamic Duo Back together at last! In this fun-loving featurette, celebrate the significant screen return of two of the world’s most beloved stars, Julia Roberts and George Clooney.
  • Destination WeddingIt's a beautiful day for a wedding in paradise- and you're invited! Take a deep dive into all the details of Lily's magical day.
  • Production in ParadiseFrom Balinese marriage customs to filming in the Whitsundays, discover how filmmakers were able to bring a slice of paradise to audiences around the world in this making-of.
  •  Keep a Straight FaceIt's hard to keep a straight face with a best friend by your side. Spend a day on set with real-life pals Kaitlyn Dever and Billie Lourd as they try not to distract each other too much.

The premise of Ticket to Paradise is as formulaic and predictable as it gets, and the humor is hit-or-miss. I never laughed at anything that transpired throughout the 104-minute length, but I did grin from time to time at the sheer joy of seeing George Clooney and Julia Roberts on screen together again. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the film is seeing their interaction. Kaitlyn Dever is excellent as their lovestruck daughter, and Billie Lourd is amusing as her party-loving best friend. ╌★★★✰✰
