  Billy's Answer

There are six places to buy books in my small town: Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Harps, Library, Salvation Army, and Walmart. Finding a brand-new book at the Salvation Army is uncommon. The library has a long wait before receiving any new books, and those that do arrive are few and far between. The dollar store books I find are a few years old but appear to be brand new. Every month, a few new books arrive at the supermarket, but I never purchase any of them. At Walmart, I've only ever discovered brand-new books when they decided to replenish their shelves.

    1. It would be good if there was a Target or Barnes & Noble close, but I just order it if I can't find the specific new book I want.

  2. There really isn’t anywhere to buy books in my town. Maybe the grocery store or Dollar General but they don’t offer anything I’d want to read.

    1. There aren't many books at my Dollar General; mostly it's just a few random paperbacks and maybe a few good hardcovers. I never purchase the new paperbacks at the retail prices that the grocery shop receives.

  3. That sounds stressful. Usually it's not too difficult for me to find the new books on my list. Though there's always that one book that never seems to make it to the stores so I have to order online.

    1. My local Walmart will receive a few new titles but will go months without stocking the "so-called" book department.

  4. I can relate to those long waits at the library. I've figured out how to get on the waiting list before they have the book, so now usually as soon as it comes in I can borrow it. Otherwise, I can easily wait months from them! :)

    1. Not only are there long lines. Since the library reopened after the pandemic, new librarians have taken over and focused on female readers. Now, the library rarely carries books geared toward men, such as science fiction, thrillers, mysteries, and so on.

  5. Looking at what is currently on Net Galley is a great way to find books before their release dates. That often gets me onto the library list quite early.

    1. My library does not keep a "list" of upcoming titles. NetGalley is fantastic.

  6. So many places! How strange that it is hard to get new books.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. My local Walmart had difficulty obtaining books for many years prior to 2020. You'd think that the county's only "big" store would have a decent-sized book department, but that's not the case.

  7. I didn't do a post today, but not really on finding books in the book store. I usually find what I need.

Also.....thanks for having all next year's questions done, Billy. IMPRESSIVE JOB!!

    1. I just recently published the January 2023–January 2024 schedule. Since there weren't enough submissions, I needed to fill in the blanks. I made an effort to ask fresh questions and to think creatively.

  8. I really struggle to get new books as well - I have plenty of sources for second-hand, but for new I generally have to head online

  9. My Walmart's hit or miss. I've never really bought books at the Dollar stores but after discovering your posts I've been meaning to check them out and see what they have.

  10. Sounds rough w/no bookstores nearby. Thankfully, you live in an Internet shopping age, eh?
