{Sunday Post} - Breathless, 61 Hours, and Audrey Rose

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Morning, Everyone!

I cannot believe October is almost over. Honestly, it doesn't feel like Halloween to me. It's my favorite holiday, but I'm not in the mood for All Hallow's Eve this year. Every October, I watch a slew of horror movies, but the only one I have seen is Halloween Kills. I've seen the slasher sequel twice on Peacock. While it's far from perfect, I like it slightly better than the 2018 reboot.

Library Visit

My local library is open to the public once again. I stopped by there on Friday afternoon and didn't check out anything. There were a few new titles in the "new books" section, but nothing caught my eye. The "For Sale" bookshelves were full. As far as I could tell, they were the same titles that I saw on my last visit. I guess nobody wants to buy $2 used books.

There's a free section of books and movies in the library's antechamber. I picked up two double-feature DVDs - Dark Places / Horror Express starring Christopher Lee and Dead of Winter / Audrey Rose. The discs need a little cleaning, but they should play just fine.

Dune

Despite my dislike for Dune after watching the movie 30+ years ago, I bought the DVD for $5. It's not nearly as horrible as I remembered it. Sure, it's confusing and campy, but I liked it weirdly.

I watched the big-budget remake on HBO Max last night - and it was different. Critics and Youtubers gave the film high praises for the visuals, but I couldn't disagree more. I thought the visuals were dull as a doorknob. Sure, the sandworm scenes were cool-looking, but they were too brief. Yes, I know the film only covers half of the novel, and the sandworms will return in part 2. But will there even be a sequel? They should have filmed two movies back-to-back or made one 3-hour film. For me, there were too many slow scenes. The director or editor could have shaved down the runtime by half an hour without altering the story.

What Am I Reading?

My reading plans changed last week. Due to a canker sore and sore throat, I took a few days off reading (and reviewing) last week. On Friday, I began Star Trek: Coda: The Ashes of Tomorrow by James Swallow, which I finished yesterday. My review will be posted on Tuesday (a.k.a. the publication day).

Today, I'll be reading Revival Road by Chris DiLeo for a book tour review post that'll be published tomorrow. On Monday, I'll be reading Goosebumps Slappyworld: Judy and the Beast by R.L. Stine. I had preordered the novelization of Halloween Kills. It's coming from Amazon. I'm hoping to receive it either on the 26th (publication day) or 27th. Whenever I get the book, I will read it right away and review it before Halloween. Lastly, I will read The Living Dead novel that I mentioned in last week's Sunday Post, and I also want to have the review posted before Oct. 31st.

What's in the Mail?

Some time or another, Paramount Pictures sent me Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins 4K Ultra HD, and Lionsgate sent The Colony Blu-ray.

There's a pile of movies on my desk that I need to review. Besides The Colony, I have viewed all of them. My main goal is to get these reviews written and posted before November 1st.

What's New On the Bookshelf?

Since it's been a few weeks since my last thrift store visit, I made a quick stop there on Saturday afternoon and picked up 61 Hours by Lee Child and Breathless by Dean Koontz. The funny thing is I almost bought 61 Hours at the library for $2, but I'm glad that I didn't. Twenty-five cents has a better ring to it than two dollars. Right? I wasn't 100% for sure if I already own a copy of Breathless. I recognized the title but not the cover. Since it was only ten cents, I went ahead and added it to my collection.

The only new eBook on Kindle is Hunters of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

  1. Nice new reads and movies! I am still so behind on my movie watching. DVDs from quite a few Black Fridays are still stacked up waiting for me to watch. Weekends just seem to fly by with other priorities and during the week it's impossible to sit and watch a 2+ hour film. Hope you enjoy the movies and books!

  2. I've heard of Halloween Kills but haven't seen that. And I love Halloween too.

I'm ambivalent about Dune (the movie). Several of my friends have seen it and were pretty meh. I'm surprised too they didn't film the next half already. Seems weird. And only half the book? I know it's long but... IDK.

    New Sershen and Zaritskya? Yes.

    1. Dune did well enough at the box office and on HBO Max for Warner Bros. to give the green light for Dune Part 2. It is supposed to come out in October 2023.

  3. I'm looking forward to the new Dune movie as I thought the trailer was intriguing. Shame you didn't think much to it. I have to wait a while to see it here in the UK I think.
