Top Tips for Keeping Your House Secure

Do the things that go bump in the night startle you awake? Do you struggle to drift off to sleep because you’re wondering if you left the door unlocked? Or are there people in your area that make you feel intimidated and concerned over break-ins? These feelings aren’t uncommon, but everyone should feel safe in their home. If you want to create a living environment that feels more secure so that you can rest easy, here are a few tips you might be interested in.

Invest in Smart Locks

You should always make sure that your door locks are of good quality, as some are easier to break and manipulate than others. You can find out about the best type of door lock when you speak to a locksmith, or you could also explore the option of smart locks. Not only do they come in handy if you have lost your keys (as you can enter a code to unlock it), but they are incredibly strong, too. While there is a risk of your smart lock being hacked, if you speak to the person who is installing your lock, they should be able to advise you on how you can minimize this risk. CCTV

Another way you can make your home more secure is by investing in CCTV. Smart security systems usually come with this function and can allow you to see who is at your door before you answer. Having cameras positioned towards the rear of your property as well as at the front is also a good idea so you can cover all areas. This can act as a deterrent for thieves, but at the very least, if you are burgled, you should have some video footage to work with to find the culprits.

High Fences

Garden fences are great at providing a bit more privacy for time spent in the garden, but they also act as another level of security around the perimeter of your property. If you want to make it harder for unwanted guests to get onto your land, choose to make your fences as high as possible (within reason, of course). You could also look at putting anti-climbing features on them such as spiked tops.

Leave Valuables Out of Sight

Where you can, try to avoid placing valuable items in your home by the windows as this might make your property more attractive to opportunist thieves. Things like your TV, laptops and computer, jewelry, or other expensive things should be put out of sight. If you have limited space in your house and by the windows is the only viable place to put your TV or computer desk, you could always choose frosted glass for the lower panes in your windows, or netted curtains/blinds to obstruct the view.

If you want to feel safer in your home and have peace of mind when you go out, think about these tips and how they can help to make your home more secure.

  1. Also good to keep medicine out of view. It may be for chronic conditions (a.k.a. no street value), but someone who looks in a window or delivers something won't know that. No sense tempting.
