{Sunday Post} - Seance, The Amityville Horror, and The Yankee Widow

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Morning, Everyone!

A Pounding Headache

I would have worked on this post early on Saturday, but by mid-afternoon, I had a pounding headache caused by a mixture of sinuses and allergies. I spent too much time outside doing yard work in high humidity, which sent my allergies through the roof.

Dishwasher Goes Wacky

It seems like everything likes to break down around the same time. First, it was the air conditioner, and now it's the dishwasher. On Wednesday, it wasn't working right. On Thursday and Friday, it was working correctly. Today, it's not working again. It might be a short in the cord, which is an easy fix. Or it could be the button panel. Or the motor. If it's one of the latter, I'm going to say forget about getting it fixed. Why waste $250 or more on getting it repaired when I can save the money for a new dishwasher. Right?

On another sucky note, the burners on the stove aren't working correctly for whatever reason.

Update: I tested the dishwasher's cord with a multimeter, and there's nothing wrong with it. Then I took off the door to get to the panel, and everything is fine there. It's most likely the motor.  I don't have an extra $600 or more for a new dishwasher. So, I'll be washing dishes by hand for the immediate future.

The Purple Shirt

I have never worn a purple shirt in my life, but I almost bought one yesterday morning at a Walmart in the next county. The t-shirt's print was of my favorite movie - Halloween! Yep, Michael Myers was on a purple shirt!

What Am I Reading?

Yeah, I'm still reading Once Upon a Time in Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino. I ended up working on the prompt images for the Book Blogger Hop, my weekly bookish meme, which ate up most of my time last Sunday. I read Goosebumps SlappyWorld: Fifth-Grade Zombies on Monday and started Once Upon a Time in Hollywood on Tuesday. As of this writing, I'm on page 175.

What's in the Mail?

RLJE Films sent me an advanced Blu-ray of their upcoming horror flick, Seance. I'll be watching it sometime this week.

What's New On the Bookshelf?

I ordered The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson from Hamilton Books, and I received it in less than a week. That's a record time for Hamilton Books because it typically takes two or three weeks to get orders from them. I read the book 20+ years ago. If my memory serves me correctly, the library copy I had read had the infamous ghost boy picture in it. The 2019 edition doesn't have the picture. Not that it matters to me, as I believe the picture was a hoax.

Yesterday, I was on the hunt for James Patterson's newest book The Shadow, but I couldn't find it anywhere. However, I did pick up The Yankee Widow by Linda Lael Miller. I looked at it several times before I decided to get it. I'm a sucker for Civil War stories, and The Yankee Widow looks like it should be a good read.

  1. Ahhhh man...you've has bad luck when it comes to house hold appliances. It sounds like an expensive month...but hopefully they'll keep working for a long time to off set the costs lol. Have a great week!

    1. Yeah, it's been a not-so-great month for me. It's going to be a while until I can afford a new dishwasher. I still have hopes all that's wrong with is the cord. I'll get the stove fixed sometime. However, for the time being, I can use a lighter to light the burners.

  2. I should probably add Amityville to my wishlist. Such a fascinating story. And I feel you on the broken appliances. We've been without a freezer for probably a year and a half at this point? It went around the same time as the washing machine and both of the hubby's fans.

    1. It all depends if you believe George Lutz's story. The author of the book made up many of the scariest aspects of the novel. None of the other owners of the house have ever stated of any supernatural things occurring. The only real 'true story' was the DeFeo murders the year before the Lutz family moved into the house.

  3. I feel your pain with uncooperative appliances. Our previous stove had some wacky burners as well. The burner we used the most couldn't be adjusted. It was either off or high. Ugh. It caused many burnt meals.

I have Amityville Horror on audio, but haven't listened yet. I haven't gotten up the courage. It freaks me out that it's in the nonfiction category!!

    1. There is some truth to The Amityville Horror. The Lutz family did live there for 28 days. They claimed strange things occurred inside the home. The youngest daughter, Missy, did have an invisible pig friend named Jodie. They fled from their home in the middle of the night on the 28th day. However, Jay Anson added his spin on the story in an attempt to make it scarier.

  4. Oh that sucks! What bad luck but it always seems to go that way... One thing breaks and others follow like dominoes. :(

I hope your allergies settle down and that the coming week is a better one.

    1. Plus, the garage and basement flooded a few weeks ago because of the excess rain. Nothing important got ruined. It just took forever to clean up the mess.

My headache is gone, and my allergies are slightly better today.

  5. When one thing breaks, everything breaks! No matter what happens, it always ends up that way.
Seance looks interesting, I have Shudder, I might have to see if I can find that.
I hope you enjoy all your new reads!

Have a great week, Billy! Happy Reading!

    1. I don't have Shudder, so I have no clue if Seance is on there. If not, I'm sure it will be on there eventually.

  6. Thanks for sharing the quality horror content. Sorry about your dishwasher, that really stinks. Light purple is a good color just about everyone, it's complimentary against all skin colors. --I imagine the shirt you saw was more of a royal purple however.

    1. It might've been a royal purple. FYI: I don't know my purples.

  7. Yasss Halloween. The best scary movie ever and no other scary movie can compare to it.

Sorry about the dang appliances going out on you. They do all tend to go at the same time, don't they? So annoying.

I recently had a heating element replace in my oven and now I'm thinking the burners on the range need replacing, too. One of them suddenly goes from medium to full-on hot, all by itself and the others seem to take forever to heat up. SOMETHING is amiss.

    1. Halloween (1978) is my favorite movie.

Yeah, it seems like bad things come in threes, and it happens to me every single year.

  8. I haven't heard of that Seance movie, but it looks like my type! I'll keep my eyes open for it at the theaters. My stove works mostly. But I'm thinking once I get my retirement money out later this year I might buy a new one because it's not a great stove. The timer doesn't work and it only beeps once when the food is done, so I could accidentally let stuff burn. Ugh. Hope you have a good week!

    1. I don't know if Seance had a theatrical run. If it did, it was probably limited. It'll be on Blu-ray and DVD in early August. It might already be on Shudder.

    2. I'm having problems with my stove too. It's a newer stove. I understand why it's acting up. The burners won't' light on their own, and, now, when I open the oven door, the light will flicker, and the clock will flicker off.

    1. Probably have to get the gas stove/oven. First, it was the burners, and now if you open the oven door, the clock flashes off.

    2. Sorry to hear about your washing machine. I had to replace my washing machine and dryer last year.
