Blu-ray Review - 2067 (2020)

The Australian futuristic time-traveling fantasy 2067 landed on DVD and Blu-ray on November 17, 2020, from RLJE Films (part of AMC Networks). Directed by Seth Larney (Tombiruo), the 114-minute film stars Kodi Smit-McPhee (X-Men Apocalypse, Let Me In) and Ryan Kwanten (True Blood).

Set in 2067, Earth is infected by climate change, forcing humans to live on artificial oxygen. To make things worse, an illness is killing the world's population. After receiving a message from the future, the only hope for humanity is a tunnel worker Ethan Whyte (played by Kodi Smit-McPhee), and his adopted big-brother Jude Mathers (played by Ryan Kwantena), who must time travel to the year 2474 to search for the "cure."

Final Thoughts

I first watched 2067 over a week ago when I was half asleep, and I rewatched it last night, so I can catch the things I missed. It's a weird science fiction flick with a13 Monkeys vibe that never really outshines its smart concept. I don't know what the film's budget was, but the visual effects were shockingly entertaining. The acting is another story. While Kodi Smit-McPhee gives a decent performance, he's a miscast as the film's protagonist, which should have been played by an older actor. Ryan Kwanten is alright as an anti-villain, but he overacts in many scenes.

Overall, despite the script's shortcomings, I enjoyed watching 2067. It's a surprisingly well-made little film with an intriguing plot. If you're into die-hard science fiction, then you might understand the premise of 2067, but the story will be above the average viewer's head.
