Rambling - BDSM In Books & Movies

It's another sleepless night, and with way too many thoughts in my head, here I am again writing a late at night rambling.

Recently, I realized that there way too many erotic romances out there. Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against these types of books. Over the years, I have read my share of steamy romances, so I understand the appeal. While browsing the small book section at my local Walmart, I noticed most of the romance titles were BDSM romances. And, no, I'm not referring to the trashy Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy by E. L. James. These books seemed to be better written. Or at least that's what I got from reading a few blurbs.

What attracts readers to BDSM romances?

Well, just like traditional romance novels, we read them for entertainment and to distract us from our day-to-day troubles. Though for the BDSM titles, I'm guessing it might have something to do with exploring a dominant sex fantasy, such as roleplay and bondage.

While the BDSM lifestyle doesn't appeal to me, I'm well aware many people do enjoy it. There are many (and I mean many) BDSM dating websites for singles and couples. If you're looking for a dom sub, there's a good chance you can find one (or more) located near wherever you live.

I know the Fifty Shades of Grey books and movies are popular and have probably inspired many of you to spice up things in your bedroom. Just remember those stories are fictional and were written only for entertainment.

If you do decide to venture into BDSM, please take precautions and don't jump into a relationship right away. Safety should also be a #1 rule. When you find someone you like, take things slow by chatting online or talking on the phone before meeting in person. If you decide to take things a step further, please meet him or her in a public setting, like a coffee shop, bar, or restaurant. Then if things go beyond that, make sure you talk with your "date" about hard limits (off-limits things) and safewords.

My knowledge of BDSM is limited, so please do your research on the subject. When I say "limited," I'm mostly referring to the BDSM that have appeared in horror movies, such as 1986's From Beyond (based on the story of the same name by H. P. Lovecraft), Jason X, the Hellraiser films. Yeah, I know these are bad examples, especially the Hellraiser films, which are more about torture than pleasure. However, these movies were how I learned about the BDSM lifestyle, and I'm well aware there's more to it than just whips, chains, and Barbara Crampton dressed in a kinky leather outfit. (You need to watch From Beyond to know what I'm referring to.) I have nothing against the BDSM lifestyle, though I don't believe I will ever venture into that world.

I'll end this rambling here, as it seems sleepiness is beginning to kick in for me. If you have any thoughts about this post, then please leave a comment.

  1. I'm not really into erotica. I was approached when Fifty Shades came out by the author to review it. I read the synopsis and was like no thanks. Little did I know it would blow up to be so huge. So skip to a few years later, I took the time to read a copy. I actually enjoyed it and got what all the fuss was about. It was kinky, no doubt about it, but it was still tasteful somehow. I liked the mysterious nature to Grey too. What can I say? I did not read further, I still have no ambition to read book 2 or 3, but if it came across me somehow, I would.
