Sunday Post - The Bedeviled, The Lodge, and The Unlucky Ones

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Morning, Everyone!

It doesn’t feel like Mother’s Day! The nursing homes are all still locked down, so I cannot visit my 78-year-old grandmother. I’m not allowed to drop off a gift, but I may send a gift in the mail. Yeah, I am stumped on this one. What’s the difference?

Even in an insignificant Missouri town, the stores are a madhouse with everyone, young and old, shopping without wearing a face mask and ignoring the six-foot rule.

What Am I Reading?

As of this post (written on Saturday night), I have read 60% of the 1978 horror novel, The Bedeviled by Thomas Cullinan. If I am not finished with it by the time you’re reading this, then I’ll be wrapping it up on Sunday morning. Then I’ll be reading the magical romantic comedy, Grave Humor by R.J. Blain, which is a book tour. I will post my review for it on May 13th.

What's in the Mail?

Nothing new review-wise. However, Amazon finally sent me The Peanut Butter Solution Blu-ray and the Gothic vampire bookmark I had ordered several weeks ago. Amazon shipped them separately and arrived two days apart. They shipped the Blu-ray in a small padded bubble mailer and, weirdly; they shipped the bookmark in a gigantic box. Why?

Movies!

Besides from The Peanut Butter Solution, I have added a few new titles for my movie collection. First, I found Mandy in the $5 DVD/Blu-ray bin at Walmart. I had just saw a trailer for it on the Color Out of Space Blu-ray, and, oddly; I ran across the DVD. I watched it late last night, and it’s a sick, twisted flick. Hammer released the horror movie, The Lodge, on Blu-ray on May 5th. I had looked for it on Thursday at Walmart, but they didn’t have it. I went back there today (Saturday) and they had it in stock, but it got shelved in an odd spot far from the other recent releases. Last, I got two horror DVDs at Dollar Tree - Exorcist: The Beginning and The Unwilling.

What's New on the Bookshelf?

I got four books at Dollar Tree - The Stolen Angel by Sara Blaedel, The Return by Suzanne Woods Fisher, Daddy’s Girl by Margie Orford, and The Other Girl by Erica Spindler. The Return and The Stolen Angel have their original Walmart price tags on them, but I only paid $1 for each. Yes, there are minor damage to three of the books and it’s all my fault because I accidentally stepped on the shopping bag. While I don’t mind owning damaged books, it still bothers me I did it.

I believe I might have mentioned that many years ago; I had attempted to read Frank Herbert’s Dune, but never finished it, as I thought the story was confusing. I purchased Dune Messiah on Kindle for $1.99 this past week, which is the second book in the series. Why would the publisher put the second book on sale and not the first? Who knows! With a new film adaptation coming soon, I might take another try at reading the books. Hey, maybe the first installment will be on sale when the movie gets released.

Also new on my Kindle are Terminal Freeze by Lincoln Child and Nightshade and Damnations by Gerald Kersh.

  1. It is weird that they don't let you drop off a gift but you can mail one. There doesn't seem to be a difference to me either. I wonder if they actually think these things through. The Bedeviled looks good. Hope you end up loving it!

    1. I do understand that they want the nurse home to be less exposed to the outside the world. But, how many postal workers touched the box during processing? Was the box exposed to other mail that has already been exposed to the virus?

  2. I think it might have to do something with ten people dropping off 10 gifts for ten patients vs one postman/courier guy delivering 10 gifts. The risk is lesser? I am just guessing. I hope everything gets better soon.

A day after I sent the package, I called my grandmother and she had already received it. An aide had set the box on her bed and then sanitized it. Why didn't they do this in a separate room and wait 24 hours before giving her the box?

  3. Amazon has always been weird with their packing methods. I feel like I've gotten a bookmark from them sent like that too! At least you know it shouldn't be bent out of shape that way!

Hope you enjoy all the new reads and movies!

    1. In my opinion, it was a waste of a good box. Lol!

Though, the bookmark did arrive in great shape.

  4. Sorry you can't visit your grandma or bring her a gift personally, but I'm glad she at least can get something from you to add a little cheer to her day!

    1. Sadly, none of her other grandchildren will send her anything, not even a card.

  5. My 95 year old mother in law is in an Independent / Assisted Living facility in Phila. They have 11 cases. They do allow drop offs but no visits. I'm in Florida and people are wearing masks and standing 6 ft distance. Just heard of another friend who is hospitalized for it.. we are being very careful an being safe at home.

    1. There are 11 or 12 confirmed cases in this county, but there are none at the nursing home.

  6. I'm sorry you can't see your grandmother. that must be so hard. And I see the same thing here. so many people out and about, no masks, no social distancing. It's mind boggling.

That's funny about the bookmark in the box! You never know... !

I had trouble with Dune too when I read it back as a teen, I wanted to like it but wasn't a huge fan.
