What To Do
1. Post on your blog answering this question:
Do the star ratings a book receives on Goodreads or retail sites affect whether you buy the book or not?
3. Visit other blogs on the list and comment on their posts. Try to spend some time on the blogs reading a few posts and possibly become a new follower. The purpose of the hop is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

Billy's Answer
Not really. I decide to purchase a book based on many other factors besides star ratings. Nowadays, there are too many "paid for" reviews, especially on Amazon, so I seldom ever read them. Goodreads is a different story, as I do read the updates and reviews from friends/followers. I buy a book based on its synopsis and covers. And sometimes solely based on the author's name. Sure, seeing a 5-star rating on Goodreads and Amazon will get my attention, but if the synopsis doesn't intrigue me, then I'm not going to buy it.

For me I said it depends on the book and my desire to read it. For ones I want to read, no review will stop me. For ones I'm on the fence about I will read a mix of reviews to help my decision making.

Star ratings don't influence me much. I'm more interested in what people have to say about the book than the rating.
ReplyDeleteThe star rating is a factor but, like you Billy, the comments and reviews on Goodreads play a part too as does the book's blurb.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great weekend. x
Whoops, I definitely was off a week. Oh, well, spine/pandemic. At least I got a post up.
ReplyDeleteStar-ratings don't really influence me, though I will use them to search for reviews sometimes.
For me it's only a final piece of input if I am on the fence about buying/reading something.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I don't really pay attention to star rating, either.
ReplyDeleteUltimately, that is what matters to me as well--whether a book interests me. I might consider ratings if I am on the fence, but always reading the reviews as well, or if I am buying a book I haven't read as a gift for someone else.
ReplyDeleteHave a good weekend. Stay safe and well.
Alas I wasn't able to add my post to the linky, but the long and short of it is that I don't like to look at ratings because I don't want to go into a book with preconceived notions about it - if a book has received too many high ratings it might not live up to my expectations, and if it has too many low ratings I might not even bother reading it, and could miss out on a great book. DeleteI know exactly what you mean. There have been several times when I've heard good things about a book, only to be disappointed after reading it.
