  Billy's Answer

I was heavily bullied during my high school years in the late '90s. Reading horror books helped get through the ordeal, as the stories distracted me from the real horrors around me. It was around that time I started reading John Saul novels. I had previously read The Blackstone Chronicles and Second Child before stumbling upon several of his paperbacks at a used bookstore. If I had to narrow down to just one book, I would say Nathaniel (first published 1984) got me through the lowest point in my life. It's a dark, scary story that I reread multiple times.

  1. I honestly couldn't think of any one book that helped me through a difficult time. All books have helped me in some way, so I went for a purely simple answer for this one!

I'm so sorry to hear of your troubles from high school. It seems times really haven't changed much either sadly.

    Here's my BBH

    Have a GREAT day!

    1. Times have actually gotten worse with use of social media, which is something I'm glad wasn't available when I was in high school.

  2. Hello! I am a new follower and love the concept and the prompts of this blog hop. Ugh, I am so sorry that you were bullied in school. I cannot imagine being in school in the age of social media and having that extra layer of bullying that has even more reach to create damage. Thank you again for hosting!

  3. Sorry about your being bullied in high school.

I'm glad you were able to find books as a way to help.

    1. I have always heard that high school is supposed to be the best time of your life. Yeah - that wasn't my experience at all. High school was the worst four years of my life!

  5. This is an author I haven't heard of, but then I am not a big horror reading these days.

    1. While John Saul has had many bestsellers, he's not a big name to many readers. He retired from writing many years ago.

  6. OMG! I LOVED John Saul and read lots of his books in the 70s and 80's - Suffer The Children, The Unwanted, When The Wind Blows, Cry For The Strangers, Comes The Blind Fury and Nathaniel were all favourites of mine! I think I've still got my copies up in the loft. ;-)

    1. I own all but two psychical titles by John Saul. Those two titles are The Unwanted and Hellfire. However, I do have those two on my Kindle. One of these days I'm going to have to buy those titles off of eBay.
