Q&A with Renee Dyer, author of Sevyn

Coming soon from Forever Read Publishing is the romantic thriller Sevyn by Renee Dyer.

The author has taken a few minutes out of her busy schedule for a Q&A about her newest novel.

When did you become interested in storytelling?

Oh boy, when wasn’t I interested in storytelling? At the age of four, I told my mom I would no longer watch Sesame Street because it was an insult to my intelligence, grabbed my doodle pad, and started drawing something I wanted to watch. I’ve heard this story from my family many times. I don’t know what I drew, and I’m sure I heard Sesame Street was an insult to my intelligence from one of my four older siblings, but my mom swears this was the beginning of writing for me. It may have been through pictures, but she says I always lived in my own little world.

What was your first book/story published?

Waking Up. It’s the first of a two book story for Tucker and Adriana and the beginning of the Healing Hearts Series.

What inspired you to write Sevyn?

Sevyn was inspired by 7 Years by Lukas Graham. The first time I heard the song I didn’t hear all the words. It just sounded like a song about a boy growing up, but it stuck in my head, and suddenly an idea sparked. In the twenty minutes I waited for my son to get out of work, I had this dark, twisted story played out in my mind.

What character in Sevyn is the most/least like you, and in what ways?

I don’t know that any of the characters in Sevyn are like me. I definitely didn’t see myself in them as I was writing it, but if I had to pick something I would say it’s that many of the characters are fierce in the love they feel for their family. I am a total homebody who has never broken the law, so I am in no way like the characters in this story. I don’t like killing bugs. I’m not sure how I even came up with this one, but I’m glad I did. Kevyn’s story needed to be told.

What is your favorite part in Sevyn?

Hmmm, that’s a good question. And one I can’t answer because it will give away a major part of the book. Let’s just say a lot of planning went into making one of the twists especially gratifying. At least it felt that way to me.

What was the hardest part to write?

The emotions. I cried through so many times. This book shattered me.

What would your ideal career be, if you couldn't be an author?

A photographer—I love the way art can be seen through the lens of a camera.

Do you read reviews of your books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing?

Absolutely I read them. Seeing how readers feel about my work, tells me where I need to improve and what people enjoy. It all helps me to grow into a better author.

What well-known writers do you admire most?

Wow, there are so many. When I’m looking for a great romance, I turn to Kelly Elliott or Heidi McLaughlin. For books that tear me apart, and normally put me back together, Molly McAdams, Gail Mc Hugh, and Colleen Hoover top my list. When I’m in the mood for amazing paranormal books, Nicky Charles, J.R. Ward, Christine, Feehan, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Laurel K. Hamilton, and Kim Harrison never fail me. If I need steamy read and great story combined, Chelle Bliss is my go to.

Do you have any other books/stories in the works?

I always have more in the works. Exposed, book four in the Healing Hearts Series is written, but won’t be published until I get through rewrites on books one and two. I love the first two books, but I feel like I’ve grown since I first started publishing and want to make sure they’re at the same level as what I write now. Hidden, book five in the Healing Hearts has been started. Not Mine to Have, which was a short story in the Incognito/Revealed Anthology will become a full length novel. In my office, there are about seventeen notebooks with ideas for other stories. Among those are a broken quarterback, a plane crash, and books I’m working on with my kids—two different series. One of the kid’s series is for kids 4-7, and the other is for kids 8-12. It’s an exciting time in my house.

About the Author: From a young Renee Dyer had a love of writing, starting with a doodle pad at age four that morphed into journals. Poetry became short stories and short stories a novel. Although she’s surrounded by males all day having three sons, a husband, and a hyperactive chocolate lab, she still finds time to be herself by escaping into the fantasy of reading and writing romance. That is, until she needs a male’s perspective and garners eye rolling from her husband at all of her questions. Renee is a true New Englander. You can find her screaming profanity at the TV while the Pats play and cuddling under blankets during the cold seasons (which is most of them), reading a good book. She doesn’t believe snow is a reason to shut things down, only to slow down and admire the beauty. Ask her anything. She’s an open book—pun fully intended.
