When did you become interested in storytelling?
Thanks so much for hosting me today. It’s great to be here!
I’ve always had characters living in my head, which probably sounds a bit unhealthy, but it was like watching a movie that only I could see.
What was your first book/story published?
Diners, Dives and Dead Ends, which is a humorous mystery. I turned it into a series. Revisiting those characters is like going home and meeting up with a group of friends.
I wanted to put my own stamp on a paranormal world, add some humor and romance with a mystery thrown in for good measure.
What character in Dispelled is the most/least like you, and in what ways?
The heroine, Holly James, is an outcast. She’s a null and straddles the world between magical Others and Norms. I loved her sense of humor and the fact that she’s a fighter. My least favorite character…I don’t have one, really. Even the villains are fun to write.
What is your favorite part in Dispelled?
The romance between Holly and sorcerer, Cade McAllister. He’s a surly, by-the-book investigator, and she’s a null. He can’t practice magic when he’s near her, but he can’t force himself to stay away.
What was the hardest part to write?
Blending the story with the romance was a balancing act. I didn’t want one to overshadow the other.
What would your ideal career be, if you couldn't be an author?
A librarian. Maybe a research librarian. I love to fall down rabbit holes when I’m researching a story.
Do you read reviews of your books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing?
I always say I’m not going to read them, but I often do. I try not to let them influence me too much, but those comments are always in the back of my mind.
What well-known writers do you admire most?
Kresley Cole, Joanna Wylde, Karen Marie Moning, Kelley Armstrong, and Larissa Reinhart. They pull me into a story immediately. I love that.
Do you have any other books/stories in the works?
I’m in the middle of writing a hot romance series featuring Irish expats living in Chicago, and I’m working on my next Rose Strickland mystery.
