Blu-ray Review - The Blacklist: The Complete Third Season

NOT RATED; 980 minutes; $75.99; Amazon
Arriving on Blu-ray today from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is The Blacklist: The Complete Third Season. Created by Jon Bokenkamp, the series stars James Spader, Megan Boone, Diego Klattenhoff, Ryan Eggold, Amir Arison, Mozhan Marno, Hisham Twafiq and Harry Lennix.

The Blacklist debuted on NBC in 2013 and quickly became a hit with audiences and critics. The series centers on the "FBI Most Wanted" criminal Raymond "Red" Reddington (played by James Spader), surrendering himself to the FBI. He makes a deal with them that they would not press charges against him in exchange for him helping them locate and apprehend other criminals. He also insists on working with Elizabeth "Liz" Keen (played by Megan Boone), a rookie FBI profiler.

At the end of the second season, Liz is accused of assassinating  a U.S. Senator. With the help of Red, she escapes the authorities and becomes one of the FBI Ten Most Wanted. Season Three finds Liz and Red still on the run from the FBI. Instead of skipping the country, they go on the hunt for the clues that will unravel who had framed Liz.

With Assistant FBI Director Harold Cooper (played by Harry Lennix) under investigation, Agent Donald Ressler (played by Diego Klattenhoff) is left in charge of the FBI Task Force assigned to capture Liz and Red, but of course they are always one step ahead of the FBI.

Final Thoughts: While I've seen The Blacklist advertised countless times on NBC, I had never watched a single episode until after I had received a review copy of "The Complete Third Season" last week. The plot threads from the previous season set up the entire third season; however, I had no problems jumping right into the series.

Yes, there are few predictable moments, but overall the plots/stories are well-written. The entire cast does an excellent job, but James Spader's performance as the good/evil Raymond "Red" Reddington steals the show.

The picture-quality on all the episodes on the five Blu-ray Discs are great. The set does come with a digital UltraViolet code, but I haven't had time to see what the picture-quality of the episodes are like yet. The discs inside the case are all stacked with two on one side on three on the other.

Overall, I've enjoyed watching The Blacklist: The Complete Third Season. If you aren't already as fan of the series, I highly recommend watching the Blu-ray; it's a great way to get caught up before season four begins this fall.

  1. I watched the first season and loved it and then got busy with things and missed the 2nd and 3rd seasons - I really need to catch up on this series because like you said - James Spader really does an excellent job as "Red"

    1. I'm addicted to the series now. I ended up buying seasons 1 & 2 on DVD, so I can try to catch up before season 4 starts on Sept. 22nd.
