Review - Silver Spurs by Miralee Ferrell

Pub. by David C. Cook; 240 pages; Amazon

If you read yesterday's post on my review for A Horse for Kate, book one in the Horses and Friends series, then you would know that I'm reviewing the first three books in the series this week prior to my review post for the fourth book, which is part of a book blog tour on Wednesday.

The second book in the series is titled "Silver Spurs" and once again centers on pre-teen Kate Ferris, who had left the big city and moved with her parents and younger brother to a small town in Oregon, where they are now calling home to the ranch that once belonged to her late grandfather.

Now that Kate has her very own horse, Capri, she is determined to teach her best-friend, Tori, how to ride a horse. Unfortunately, an accident occurs; though nobody was hurt, Kate's parents decide that the girls will need a professional trainer.

Of course, Kate has bigger plans for the ranch than just getting a trainer, she wants to open up a boarding stable. After convincing her parents, they agree to help her fix the stables up and get a few new horses. Since the trainer will only work there if there are least four participants, they'll have to bring in more boarders. However, this turns out to be an easy problem to fix, as Kate gets her friends, Tori and Colt (whom also brings along his horse) to take riding lessons. That only leaves one more person for Kate to find, which, sadly, turns out to be the snobby Melissa.

Final Thoughts: While I'm not a horse lover, I have enjoyed reading the Horses and Friends series, so far. The author has created likable characters and an interesting plot that will appeal to younger readers. At around 200 pages, it was an easy read for me while I sipped on my morning cup of coffee. Overall, Silver Spurs is a cute, fast-paced read that I recommend to readers of all ages.
