Sometimes, the best writing tip is simply to read really
good writing. Good writers inspire today’s writers to aim for the best. When I
write, I like to immerse myself in my favorite writer’s voices and channel them
into my own writing. These three passages are some of the most beautiful
passages currently published.
The land seemed full of creaking and cracking and sly
noises, but there was no sound of voice or of foot. Far above the Ephel Dúath
in the West the night-sky was still dim and pale. There, peeping among the
cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star
twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of
the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold,
the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing
thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.
- J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King
"The sun had not yet risen. The sea was indistinguishable from the sky, except that the sea was slightly creased as if a cloth had wrinkles in it. Gradually as the sky whitened a dark line lay on the horizon dividing the sea from the sky and gray cloth became barred with thick strokes moving, one after another, beneath the surface, following each other, pursuing each other, perpetually."
Virginia Woolf, The Waves
"I am the sum total of everything that went before me,
of all I have been seen done, of everything done-to-me. I am everyone
everything whose being-in-the-world affected was affected by mine. I am
anything that happens after I've gone which would not have happened if I had
not come. Nor am I particularly exceptional in this matter; each "I,"
every one of the now-six-hundred-million-plus of us, contains a similar
multitude. I repeat for the last time: to understand me, you'll have to
swallow a world."
