Review:
I'm trying my best to get caught up with writing reviews before Christmas Eve. I received Miracle in a Dry Season by Sarah Loudin Thomas a few months back and I'm just now getting around to writing the review for it.
The novel centers on Perla Long, along with her daughter Sadie, settling in the small town of Wise, West Virginia in 1954. She hopes they can keep their haunting past behind them and restart their lives without the two residents asking too many questions about them. The sleepy town is suffering from a long drought and the farmers are praying for rain, well, they're praying for a miracle.
Perla never planned on falling in love again, but that is exactly what happened when she met Casewell Phillips. Once she confessed her past to him, he practically shuns her; judging her for her past sins. Despite being adjusted to his life as bachelor, he does care deeply for Perla and her daughter. It will take faith in the Lord to help guide Phillip to understand what Perla has been through.
I believe I have read a book or two by the author before, though I read so many books a year that I could be mistaken. At first glance at the cover art, I would have thought this was an Amish novel (I'm a huge Amish fiction fan.), but I wasn't too disappointed when I figured out that this wasn't an Amish story. Typically, I prefer my romantic reads to be set during the 1800s, but by chapter 7 I had completely forgotten that the book is set in the 1950s. While I did like the characters, there was just a tad bit too much drama going on for me to really enjoy it. I thought parts of the book were a little boring and I skipped over some of it just to get through it. Overall, Miracle in a Dry Season is an interesting romantic novel about the power of faith and forgiveness, but for the some reason the story didn't click with me. Don't get me wrong, other readers may like this book, it just didn't work for me.
*Disclaimer - I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Sarah Loudin Thomas grew up on a 100-acre farm in French Creek, WV, the seventh generation to live there. Her Christian fiction is set in West Virginia and celebrates the people, the land, and the heritage of Appalachia. Her first novel, Miracle in a Dry Season, releases August 2014. Married with one dog, she now lives in Western North Carolina, which is almost as beautiful as West Virginia.
