Arriving today on DVD is Transformers: Cybertron: The Complete Series, the third and final chapter in the UNICRON Trilogy, featuring all 52 episodes on 7 discs.
The series first aired in Japan in 2005 as a reboot, but when the English-dubbed version aired in the United States, new dialogue was added to connect to Transformers: Armada and Transformers: Energon; making this a trilogy. Unlike the previous series, Cybertron blends computer-animation with traditional 2D animation.
After a black hole threatens their home-world, Cybertron, the Autobots, lead by Optimus Prime, take refuge on Earth by transforming into vehicles. Before long, they are confronted by an ancient Autobot, Vector Prime, who informs them about the Cyber Planet Keys that can help stop the black hole from destroying their planet. The keys are scattered across the universe on four planets and the only map is in the hands of the Decepticons.
Along with their three human friends, Coby, Bud and Lori, the Autobots are in a race against time to find the keys and save their planet.

With Transformers: Age of Extinction passing the one-billion dollars mark at the box-office, it is no surprise that Shout! Factory continues to release the animated series to DVD for a new generation of fans. Today the final installment in the UNICRON trilogy arrives on DVD. I'm a late newcomer to the Japanese trilogy. I've enjoyed watching the previous series, Armada and Energon, this year, so I was more than eager to review Cybertron. While I do prefer old-school animation, the blend of computer and traditional animation works well here, but the continuous use of the same transforming scenes gets annoying after a couple of episodes. The storylines have more depth and the characters are better developed than they were in Energon. Overall, the episodes on Transformers: Cybertron: The Complete Series are action-packed with great animation. I highly recommend the DVD set to all Transformers fans.
