Billy's Review:

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Marry Poppins starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, Walt Disney Home Entertainment is re-releasing the classic musical on a Blu-Ray Combo Pack and DVD this Tuesday, December 10, 2013 with a new digital restoration of the film.

Mary Poppins is loosely based on the book series by the late P. L. Travers and won five Academy Awards (1964), including Best Actress (Julia Andrews), Best Song ("Chim Chim Cher-ee") and Best Special Visual Effects.

In the film, the Banks children, Jane and Michael (played by Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber) has driven every nanny they have ever had to quit that is until Mary Poppins (played by Julie Andrews) with her umbrella drifts down to apply for the new nanny position. Mr. Banks (played by David Tomlinson) sees Mary Poppins is great with children and hires her for a two-week-trial, or until she quits like all the other nannies.

The children quickly learn that Mary Poppins is unlike any other nanny they have ever had. With just the snap of her fingers she can make an object come to life. When they are introduced to Mary's good friend, Bert (played by Dick Van Dyke) - a jack-of-all-trades, Mary uses some of her magic to transport them into Bert's sidewalk drawings, where they ride a merry-go-round, go on a fox hunt and participate in a horse race. Mary Poppins dazzles her magic on the Banks children and their father, but she must leave them when the winds changes direction.

The exciting extras include:
All-New Becoming Mr. Sherman - Enjoy a conversation between legendary composer Richard Sherman and actor Jason Schwartzman (who plays Richard Sherman in Saving Mr. Banks)
All-New Mary-Oke Sing-Along
Deleted Song - "Chimpanzoo"
A Magical Musical Reunion with Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and Richard Sherman
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious: The Making of Mary Poppins

I haven't seen Mary Poppins since I was a kid and despite the film being fifty-years-old, the Oscar winning effects and the 2d animation sequence still look great, even on Blu-ray. Though I don't recall the film being over two hours long, but with all the great musical numbers and Julie Andrews’s beautiful voice, the time flies by quickly. The digital transfer has been wonderfully done, which looks amazing on a HD television. I know the film differs from the author's first two books, but I don't understand why she didn't like the animation scenes in the movie, which is depicted in the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks.

Mary Poppins: 50th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray is coming out just in time for Christmas and it would make an excellent present for both kids and adults. I had a blast revisiting Mary Poppins and I now have the Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious song stuck in my head.
