Guest Post with Jessica Aspen

Hi Billy! Thanks for having me as a guest on Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. I do have a question though, can you be a writer and not be coffee addicted? Just kidding. I ask because I think writing and coffee go hand in hand. Writers need that caffeine to stay up late and hit those deadlines, to get up early and write before work, or to keep up with a life that includes kids, dogs, and spouses. (Those spouses need attention too!) I know that those days I wake up at five (well before my alarm) I go straight for the deep, dark, rich, jolt of java juice. MMMM.

If you want to lure writers of all types, but particularly romance writers, all you need to do is toss out that invite to a coffee shop. Or show up with chocolate. Hold up a bag of dark chocolate at romance writer’s meeting and see if you get out alive. Authors love lurking at their local coffee shop and there are very specific needs for an author who is trying to write. While writing Little Red Riding Wolf I got my best writing done after work (away from the kids, house, and husband) at my local coffee hang out.

Here’s why when twisting fairy tales and writing about shape shifting lovers I go to my small town coffee shop:

1. They know me, yes they really do! And they smile when they see me. That’s a big positive when you are a writer and naturally spend hours by yourself on the computer.

2. I write about Colorado (because I live here and the mountains are gorgeous!) and in Colorado we are big into conservation. Unlike some of the bigger chains they recycle, compost, and use real mugs.

3. For a measly $0.65 I can add on a refill. That means I can sit there all day and drink coffee! Woot! (I do tip.)

4. They have food. Real food. So if I’m there for hours I can eat something besides a pastry. Very important when writing about Werewolves. Werewolves have high metabolisms and need to eat. And so do I!

But the most important thing is the coffee. I even incorporate it into my books. The sultry scent of warm coffee in the morning. Coffee the morning after when my poor character Red’s heart is broken and life looks like it will never be the same. I’m currently writing a coffee scene in the middle, just when they think it’s all going to work out. That warm breakfast moment before it all slides downhill and they know for sure that their lives are ruined.

Thinking about all the scenes that have coffee I realize I’m missing one. All romances and all fairy tales, even twisted ones, need HEAs. Happily Ever Afters. And I don’t have a conclusion with a coffee scene… yet. Hmmm, that may have to go into book three of the Twisted Tales: Come Into the Woods series. A coffee Happy Ending. But that one won’t be out for months. So for now I’ll be drinking the coffee some wonderful soul gifted me over December and get back to writing. Bottoms up!

Tired with being the runt of the litter, feisty Red jumps on the opportunity to take on the sexy new forest ranger, but when Evan uncovers evidence of wolves, things get out of control. Can Red keep her were-wolf identity secret and still save Evan from her brother’s thirst for blood?

Fraternizing with humans is taboo, but when feisty werewolf Red runs into hunky new forest ranger Evan Brewster, she jumps on the opportunity to let loose her desires. Evan is stoked when he meets the petite red haired hottie, and combined with his new discovery of wolves in Colorado, thinks his career and life are made. Caught between her sexy lover and her pack can Red trust Evan with her secrets, or must she sacrifice her human lover and her heart?
