Julie Charlton is a wonderful wife and mother, but something is missing from her life. What she needs is some excitement and adventure. Luckily, her sister-in-law, Susan, got picked to be on an upcoming reality series and she gets to bring someone with her. That person happens to be Julie. And they also get to bring their families with them.
What is the reality series about? Well, the participants leave their modern lifestyle and move to the Amish country, where they have to live simple. That means no technology of any kind, except for the cameras that are filming their every move.
Susan is a Martha Stewart wannabe who tries to make everything she does perfect, but Julie doesn't adjust to her new lifestyle very easily.
I've been and avid Amish fiction reader for years and I eagerly signed up to review Almost Amish courtesy of Bethany House in exchange for an honest review. I have read a few other books by Kathryn Cushman and her writing style continues to grow with each new book. The plot in Almost Amish is a silly one at best. A couple of families leave their lifestyle and live the life of an Amish person. Hasn't this already be done before? Anyone ever of heard of the Simple Life reality series that started Paris Hilton. Sure it wasn't set in the Amish country, but the premise is very similar. Despite the unoriginal plot, the characters were likeable as they learned a few life lessons and grew closer to their families. The premise is silly, but I still enjoyed reading Almost Amish.
