{Sunday Post}—Books, Depression, and Willow

The Caffeinated Book Reviewer's Kimberly hosts a weekly meme called "The Sunday Post"!

Weekly Tidbits

  • I didn't have the best week this past week. When I least expect it, melancholy returns and takes over and saps all of my energy, leaving me feeling down, empty, and physically exhausted, to the point where I couldn't get out of bed some days. I'm doing my best to handle everything, so please don't worry about me.

  • The Willow sequel series was one of the reasons I wanted to sign up for Disney+. Unfortunately, the series has disappointed me due to its poor writing, contemporary speech, and overarching message that Disney occasionally loves to ram down our throats. If only Madmartigan would return and save the day.

What Am I Currently Reading?

I didn't read very much during this past week. I finished Star Trek: Harm's Way by David Mack, and I'll post the review sometime tomorrow. I'm on page 160 in Dune: The Lady of Caladan by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, a book I decided to read instead of Thief of Fate by Jude Deveraux and Tara Sheets—probably be my next read, followed by Dune: The Heir of Caladan.

What's New in the Mailbox?

The Ticket to Paradise Blu-ray was supplied to me by Universal Studios Home Entertainment on Tuesday. I've viewed the movie but haven't yet written a review. I intend to work on that either today or tomorrow since I want to post the review on December 13—the day the Blu-ray is released. So you know, I'm giving away two digital movie codes. The link is at the very top of the sidebar.

An Early Christmas Present

I received a book for Christmas from a friend in North Carolina, Bev Vincent's Stephen King: A Complete Exploration of His Work, Life, and Influences. I had read an uncorrected proof through NetGalley, but it was an Adobe Digital Editions version—essentially a loan that expires after a certain amount of time. After reviewing the ebook, I promptly added the book to my Amazon wishlist, which is probably how my friend learned about it. With all the b&w and color photographs throughout, the 8.5" by 11" hardback is far superior to the ebook.

What's New on the Shelf?

The thrift store's book area was noticeably empty on Saturday morning. I didn't find any new titles, but I did pick up The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth, which I came across last weekend but didn't get.

I could scream at myself! Three "Terry Goodkind" ebooks—Wizard's First Rule, Blood of the Fold, and Temple of the Winds—were discounted on Kindle on Friday. I already have Blood of the Fold in paperback, but I didn't have the other books, so I purchased them, or so I thought. Before I wrote this post, I was unaware that I had accidentally purchased "Blood of the Fold" rather than "Wizard's First Rule." Why? I'm not sure. Either I'm blind, stupid, or both, I suppose. The ebook is only $1.99, so there's no need to worry. I've seen the Sword of Truth books for sale as "Daily Deals" before, and I'm sure it won't be the last.

In addition, I purchased The Brass Verdict and The Wrong Side of Goodbye, both written by Michael Connelly, for $3.99 apiece.

  1. Sorry to hear you weren't feeling your best. I hope things get better for you. I haven't had the chance to start the Willow series yet but I'm sad to hear it's not living up to expectations. I recently rewatched Willow so I was preparing for this show, but now I'm feeling a bit bummed that it might not live up to the hype.

Nice new reads! Those are all new to me ones but I hope you enjoy them all!

    1. Don't hold high hopes for the series. The acting is cheesy, the writing is bad, and the production values are low.

  2. Never heard of 5000 Blankets, but it looks interesting! Lots of good books it seems this week. Hope you enjoy them all!

    1. 5000 Blankets will not be released in theaters until December 12 and 13, for two nights only. It's a low-budget Christian film that I saw through a screener.

  3. Hope you get over the doldrums soon - it's not fun feeling so out of it. As usual, you picked up quite a variety of books this week - I've made that mistake too when buying a free or discounted Kindle book and I'm too quick on the button or not paying enough attention and get the wrong thing. Oh well, not the end of the world. Hope your upcoming week is brighter.

    1. I thought I had purchased the right ebook, but it seems I didn't. I think I understand what happened: I was browsing the daily deal page when I found the books I wanted, signed in, returned to the deal page, and made the incorrect purchase. To be fair, the covers are fairly similar.

  4. I didn't have a great week either. For me it was partly the weather- I don't usually suffer from seasonal affective disorder or anything like that (at least I don't think) but it was gloomy here and I was down all week. Anyway, hope you are feeling better.

I watched the first two episodes of Willow and was bored to tears. Plus it felt kind of low budget after Rings of Power- which, to be fair, I'm sure the budgets were HUGELY different- but I'm really debating whether to continue. I wanted to like it, too.

    1. I also wanted to enjoy Willow, but the writing and production are both terrible. It resembles a lower-budget Disney Channel series more than a Disney+ series, both visually and tonally. The third episode isn't any better.

    2. That's a bummer. I was going to watch one or two more, in case it got better, but honestly not even sure I'll muster the will to do that!
