{Sunday Post}—A Christmas Memory, Domain, and Star Trek: Harm's Way

The Caffeinated Book Reviewer's Kimberly hosts a weekly meme called "The Sunday Post"!

Weekly Tidbits

  • It's Friday night, and I can't sleep, so I made some coffee, which won't help me sleep later, and started working on my Sunday Post. I've been sick for the majority of the week. I'm beginning to wonder if the second booster injection is to blame. I had a low-grade fever on Tuesday, and a cold sore appeared on Wednesday. And I probably made things worse by trying to go about my days, as usual, resulting in me burning out in the early evenings, except for Wednesday, when I watched Chucky: The Series.

What Am I Currently Reading?

This past week, my reading has been, at best, sluggish. I completed reading David Mack's Star Trek: Vanguard: Harbinger and read and reviewed Lee and Andrew Child's No Plan B. I then went back to reading Frank Herbert's Dune. I've read 43% of the book, but there are four appendices, a terminology section, and an "Afterward" by Brian Herbert at the book's back, so the actual percentage is probably closer to 53%. I'm hoping (and crossing my fingers) to finish it over the weekend; so I can go on to the Caladan prequel trilogy—The Duke of Caladan, The Lady of Caladan, and The Heir of Caladan.

I'm still reading the second chapter of Jude Deveraux and Tara Sheets' Thief of Fate. I could probably finish reading it in an hour or two if I put my mind to it. I put a bookmark in Desert Star by Michael Connelly and want to read it shortly. Then, I intend to sit down and read Paperback Jack by Loren D. Estleman, which is currently on my Kindle, although I might not get to it until December.

What Has The Mail Delivered?

TOR sent me Dune: The Heir of Caladan by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, which I'll read when I finish the first two volumes in the trilogy, which I already possess. A Christmas Memory by Richard Paul Evans, a novella-sized hardcover sent to me by Gallery Books. Finally, and somewhat unexpectedly, Gallery Books sent me Star Trek: The Original Series: Harm's Way by David Mack. I knew I'd be getting a copy, but I had no idea it would arrive so soon, given the book's release date is December 13th.

I received A Discovery of Witches: The Complete Trilogy Blu-ray set on Tuesday after the delivery got delayed for whatever reason. I had watched the series when it originally aired, so I viewed random episodes to check the video and audio quality and viewed the bonus extras. I posted my review on Wednesday.

What's New on the Shelf?

What a surprise—a new James Patterson novel! I had no idea The Perfect Assassin was coming out this month until I stumbled upon it in a store. It's a follow-up to the original Doc Savage story, centering on the character's grandson, Professor Brandt Savage. I was hesitant to buy the book since I'd loathed The Shadow reboot, which James Patterson also co-wrote with Brian Sitts, but after reading a few pages, I decided to grab it.

I'm beginning to despise the newly renovated Dollar General store since there isn't much illumination; you need a torch merely to see through the aisles. Anyway, I went there briefly on Friday afternoon and pulled a paperback copy of Liane Moriarty's The Husband's Secret from the shelf. The book has been there for some months. I enjoyed reading Big Little Lies by the author and thought, "What the heck!?" before getting the paperback for $3.

My days are starting to run together; it was either Thursday or Friday that I stopped by the thrift store and picked up 3001: The Final Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke, Invasion by Robin Cook, and Domain by Steve Alten.

New titles on my Kindle are: Sucker Punch by Laurell K. Hamilton, Lord John and the Hand of Devils by Diana Gabaldon, and The Dismembered by Jonathan Janz.

  1. oooo you've read Star Trek: Vanguard: Harbinger too! I read it years ago, I love the star trek books, he he. I don't know any one else who's even interested in reading them. I hope you enjoyed it :)
I'm sorry to hear that you've not been well. I've heard a lot of people haven't been well with the boosters this year. Do you think it might be that? Take care and I hope you have a good week x

    1. It's nice to find another Star Trek fan. I bought the Vanguard series a while back through a 99-cent monthly sale on Kindle. I thought I would read the first book before I was sent a copy of Harm's Way, which takes place before Vanguard: Precipice. The synopsis for Harm's Way is that the Enterprise is on a mission to save a missing Federation scientist, until they become trapped between the Klingons' infamous Captain Kang and Starfleet's Operation Vanguard.

  2. Hope you're feeling better! That video is great. I would of swore that the evil stepmom was Laura dern.

Doc Savage huh? I read those as a kid. I still have fond memories of the one where they went into th Sargasso Sea. :) And Dune! I wasn't a huge fan of Dune but I love the book covers. The Husband's secret was pretty good, I thought. I did the same thing- picked it up after reading Big Little Lies. 3001 I haven't read but I enjoyed the second one a lot- the movie version with Scheider anyway.

    1. That is Laura Dern playing Swift's evil stepmother.

Later tonight, I'll probably finish Dune. When I was younger, I started reading it but gave up after getting bored. As an adult, I don't find Dune terribly dull.

3001 is the fourth and final book in the Odyssey series. The second book/film was "2010."

  3. As usual, you come up with an amazing collection of books each week. You must have quite the collection of Dune and Star Trek books. Hope you feel better - I hate feeling sluggish - what a perfect word. Have a terrific week.

    1. For Dune books, I only have 10 physical copies, and the rest of the series is on my Kindle. For Star Trek books, I have a shelf filled in one bookcase with paperbacks and hardbacks. And on my Kindle, I have 245 Star Trek titles, mostly acquired via 99-cent monthly sales.
