{The Midnight Horror} - Will Rob Zombie's 'THE MUNSTERS' Reboot Be Good or Bad?

Rob Zombie has made a PG-rated remake of the '60s classic television series The Munsters. Yes, you read that correctly. The director of the Firefly trilogy (House of a 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects, and 3 From Hell) and 2007's Halloween remake and its bizarre 2009 sequel has rebooted The Munsters for Universal 1440 Entertainment for a yet-to-be-announced release date. Is it going to theaters or straight to Peacock or both? Only the powers-to-be knows, but I presume the world will know sooner than later.

The heavy metal band singer turned horror director has been sharing pre-production and filming photos on his Instagram since last year. Universal Pictures released the teaser trailer last month and the official movie poster just a few days ago. The film stars Jeff Daniels Phillips as Herman Munster, Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily Munster, and Daniel Roebuck as Grandpa.

When it comes to horror lovers, there's no middle line, and you either like or hate Rob Zombie's films. Horror fans love to complain that Zombie uses too many redneck characters, excess language, and over-the-top gore tells his stories. Also, they dislike when Zombie casts his wife, Sheri Moon, in leading roles.

I like Rob Zombie's directing style but always thought he could use a co-screenwriter. His plots and characters are creative, but the dialogues need input from a fresh set of eyes. I'm glad he's stepping away from usual gorefest films and directing something different.

Sheri Moon Zombie playing Lily Munster is the least of my worries. Daniel Roebuck, minus the mustache, looks and acts like Grandpa, the Count. I'm worried about Jeff Daniel Phillips' performance as Herman. It takes more than just makeup and costume to play Herman Munster. In the original series, Fred Gwynne's comical expressions and body movements are what made Herman Munster an unforgettable character. From what I've seen from the teaser trailer, I'm not impressed with Jeff Daniel Phillip's performance, which comes off as way too goofy. Then again, it's only a teaser, so maybe I shouldn't judge the actor just yet. The first full trailer will debut on July 13th.

What does everyone else think about The Munsters movie? Will it be good or bad?

7-14-22 - Update! The Munsters trailer did get released to the world on Wednesday, and . . .it's beyond words. Oh, yeah, it's coming out in September. There's still no official word if The Munsters will get a simultaneous theatrical and Peacock streaming release. I'm betting on a straight-to-Peacock release, and then it'll go straight to the Walmart $5 DVD bin.

  1. I look forward to seeing it! He is a decent filmmaker, so I am hopeful.

    1. I just updated the post with the full trailer. It looks badly edited, the audio sounds off, and the tone is all over the place. From my understanding, Rob Zombie only recently finished filming, which might explain why the trailer looks messy and unfinished. Hopefully, the final product will be better. I'm a fan of The Munsters, and I do like most of Rob Zombie's films, but I'm keeping my expectations low for this film.
