The Midnight Horror Review - UK Haunters (2019)

2019's documentary UK Haunters (Not Rated; 91 minutes) is now available on Digital. It will be released on DVD from Worldwide Multimedia on October 13th. Directed by Dan Brownlie (The Tombs), UK Haunters is the first feature film length documentary about the UK haunt scene.

What is a haunt scene?

A haunt scene is an attraction with live performers dressed in scary costumes, such as Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. These haunted attractions usually begin a month or so before Halloween. Haunters are character and scare actors who enjoy scaring people with their creepy movements and frightening voices/sounds, all while they are wearing gory makeup and freaky costumes.

UK Haunters is a vlog-style documentary that gives us a glimpse at the UK Haunt scene from director Dan Brownlie's point-of-view. Dan's introduction to the haunt world occurred while shooting the horror film The Tombs at the London Tombs scare attraction. Intrigued by what he had witnessed, he seeks out to learn more about the "haunter" world and finds out no documentaries were covering the UK haunt scene, so he decided to make his own.

Final Thoughts

I’ve said this before and I’m going to say it again. “I hate reviewing documentaries.” It’s not that I don’t enjoy watching them, but I have a tough time writing the reviews. A documentary is a documentary. If you don’t like the subject, then you probably shouldn’t be watching it.

While I love everything horror, I’ve only been to two or three haunt attractions, so not knowing too much about the subject, I was looking forward to watching UK Haunters.

The 91-minute documentary takes us a behind-the-scenes look at the Broadwitch Hauntfest, R Space Productions’s Death Cell attraction, Faceless Venture’s scares, and Zed Event’s zombies. We get to learn a bit about creepy makeup from Scare Face and Horrify Me.

Overall, UK Haunters is an entertaining documentary from start to finish.
