DVD Review - Houses of Hell Collection

*This is a sponsored review. All opinions are 100% mine.

Now available from Mill Creek Entertainment is the Houses of Hell Collection DVD ($19.98), featuring four horror films — American Horror House, The Dunwich Horror, House of Bones, and Mask Maker — on a two-disc set. Also included with the DVD is a movieSPREE Digital code.

American Horror House (TV-14; 87 mins) is a 2012 made-for-Syfy horror flick. It's directed by Darin Scott and stars Alessandra Torresani, Cameron Deane Stewart, and Morgan Fairchild. The plot centers around three college girls being initiated into the Kappa sorority on Halloween Night. The building the Kappa house just moved into happens to be haunted by vengeful ghosts!

The Dunwich Horror (TV-14; 86 mins) is a 2009 made-for-Syfy movie based on the short story of the same name by H.P. Lovecraft. Directed by Leigh Scott, the film stars Griff Furst, Jeffery Combs, and Dean Stockwell. The plot involves two professors trying to protect the Necronomicon book from falling into the hands of Wilbur Whateley.

House of Bones (TV-14; 90 mins) is a 2010 made-for-Syfy horror film. Directed by Jeffery Lando, the film stars Charisma Carpenter, Corin Nemec, and Ricky Wayne. The plot centers around a team of fake TV ghost-hunters investigating a house that really is haunted.

Mask Maker (R; 89 mins) is a 2010 made-to-video horror movie. Directed by G.E. Furst, the film stars Nikki Deloach, Stephen Colletti, Treat Williams, Terry Kiser, and Michael Berryman. The plot involves a couple buying a 19th-century plantation home at a very cheap price. And that price has a price — their lives!

Final Thoughts

A few years ago in the early morning hours, I found myself unable to sleep so I did what most people do — I turned on the TV and channel surfing. I came across a weird movie on the Syfy channel about a group of sorority girls trying to escape a haunted house. I only saw the tail end of it but I liked it. The cable box info had the incorrect movie title so I had no idea what the name of the movie was until I received the Houses of Hell Collection DVD. It's called American Horror House, a low-budget, campy haunted house story that's full of plot-holes and bad acting. Guess what? I loved every minute of it!

House of Bones and Mask Maker are both decent low-budget movies but they're held down by bad CGI effects. Don't bet me wrong, they're still watchable if you like B-level films. The Dunwich Horror barely resembles H.P. Lovecraft's story and it's my least favorite of the four.

There are two movies per disc in this set so don't expect picture-perfect quality. There are no special features or bonus extras.

Overall, I enjoyed watching three of the four films in the Houses of Hell Collection. If you're looking for movies to scary your death, then you need to look elsewhere. However, if you like cheesy horror flicks, then you just might like this DVD.
