Holiday Gift Guide 2019: Gabby and the Dark

Gabby and the Dark
by Carrie Bolin and Jessica Firpi
Illustrated by John Graziano

Gabby's not afraid of the dark! Well, maybe just a little. Join Gabby as she explores the deep, dark ocean. Told from Gabby's point of view, kids will relate to how scary the dark can feel but, like Gabby, will be assured that they, too, can conquer their fear and maybe even make a new friend in the process!

Where To Purchase?

Ripley Publishing has recently ventured into the world of picture book with their Aquarium mascots. Out of the four that have been published so far, Gabby and the Dark happens to be my favorite, even though the story itself seems to be unfinished. I have cat named Gaby, which is the #1 reason why it's my favorite. Plus, the main character is a turtle and I do love turtles.

The story centers around Gabby, a green sea turtle, exploring an area she's never been to before. At first she's a little bit scared but thanks to her flashlight, she's able to conquer her fears of the dark and make a big discovery. The only problem I have with the picture book is the story stops towards the end when there should have been more text or dialogue. Instead the reader has to use the illustrations and their imaginations to take a guess at what's going on.

Overall, despite my nitpicking, Gabby and the Dark is a cute picture book with lovely illustrations.
