SCARY MOVIES AND BOOKS
by KC Hilton
When it comes to
horror movies and books, I stay clear of them. I’m a regular
scaredy-cat! I even sleep with a nightlight! Ohhh, but there
are reasons for my fear, but I’ll get to that in just a moment.
Recently, I’ve tried to break the scary feelings and have read a
few books. I’ve always wondered how a person could read a
scary/horror book without shutting their eyes, lol. I started with
reading Graveminder by Melissa Marr. OK, this was a great book
and I got through it, without any permanent damage, so I decided to
read another book, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. I made it
through the Twilight series, so I thought I could handle this book.
OK, it was a great book! I seriously loved it, but let me just say,
it took me four days to read it and the first two nights I was scared
to go to bed, lol. When I did finally go to bed, I pulled the covers
nearly over my head! With all the facts woven into a Vampire story,
well… It had me believing in Vampires! Yeah, it took me a while to
get over it but I’m still here. Now, I want to see the movie! I’m
not sure how that’s going to go, but I’m willing to give it a
try.
On television, there is a channel that
has a series about Ghost Stories. Now, I can watch those during the
day, but not in the evening. Why? Because it’ll be the last thing
on my mind when I go to bed! Needless to say, I wouldn’t get much
sleep.
But why am I so afraid of scary books
and movies? It goes back to my childhood. I blame it all on my
father. It’s true! It’s funny really, but it seeded something in
my mind and I can’t break it. When I was a young girl the horror
movies like, Halloween (Michael Myers), Friday the 13th
(Jason) and Nightmare on Elm St. (Freddy Krueger) were big hits. My
brother and I had an early bedtime, like most kids do, but the
problem was, my bedroom wall shared with the living room wall. In
fact, my headboard was on that same wall. My father would watch the
scary movies at night, thinking it was fine because the kids were in
bed. I heard all the scary music, which usually lead up to the
horrible screams. I started sleeping with a nightlight!
When my children were small, I didn’t
want them to watch scary movies because they would have nightmares
(like I did as a child) and the bigger issue, was because I would
have nightmares, lol. But I didn’t tell them that! You know, I was
‘Mom’, and I wasn’t supposed to be scared of anything. I was
brave! (Not) Because of this silly rule, the kids would watch scary
movies with their friends, at their houses or go to the movies. It’s
funny really, because now, they love to watch them, and when
Halloween rolls around, the television plays tons of them. If they
are home, they turn them on, turn up the volume and torment me to no
end. They think it’s funny! I usually go to another room (to hide),
lol.
DO YOU BELIEVE IN GHOSTS?
Our girls and I, think our house has a
ghost or two living in it. Seriously! My husband thinks we’re
crazy, but we’re not. Why does our dog bark and growl at nothing
there? It’s usually in the same area of the house. Also, that part
of the house stays unusually cold, all the time.
Have you ever felt like someone was
watching you? It’s the same feeling I have in that area of the
house and I can’t seem to shake it off. One morning, I was getting
ready, and in the corner of my eye, I seen a dark figure, like a tall
man, husky in size. When I turned to look, the figure was gone! I was
alone and it really freaked out! Now, as soon as I wake up in the
morning, I turn the light on in that room. It’s actually a small
hallway that connects four rooms. It’s the original part of a four
room house (a lot has been added on since it was built). Maybe it’s
just my wild imagination? I asked my husband if he knew of anything
that had happened in the past in our home, but he denies knowing
anything.
My daughter woke up one night screaming
for us. Her bedroom connects to that hallway. When your child is
screaming in the middle of the night, what do you do? You panic
(thinking burglar) and get to your child immediately! She was so
scared; she wouldn’t get out of bed. When we got to her room
(which isn’t far away) and turned the light on, she started crying
hysterically. She said she seen a little girl sitting in a circle, on
the floor, next to her bed and when I turned the light on, the little
girl disappeared. Was it just her imagination?
Other strange things have happened
repeatedly, over the years. Sometimes, in the middle of the night, we
will hear a toilet seat slam down. When we get up in the morning, the
seats in both bathrooms are in the same up-position, as usual.
Sometimes, in the middle of the night,
when everyone is asleep and I’m in bed; I’ll hear someone say my
name. Who said it? I don’t know! But I do know I’ve heard it. It
was like someone was in our room and simply said my name out loud.
