Billy's Answer
Many of the new book covers are unappealing, unimaginative, and even boring, especially in the thriller genre, where they all seem to feature leaves, trees, doors, or windows. A good book cover should be able to sell the book, but the ones I've been seeing lately are not doing a great job. As a result, I have to rely on the author's name and a clever title to entice me to buy a book. This also applies to science fiction books, like Star Trek. The new Gallery-published books either feature actors dressed in character outfits or have uninteresting artistic interpretations of the characters. I am not a fan of these kinds of covers, and I miss the old-school artwork from the '70s and '80s that showcased starships, planets, and space stations. I find the new covers for V.C. Andrews's (the ghostwriter) books to be unattractive and not representative of the actual plots of the books. I prefer the old stepback covers.

Yeah, I find contemporary covers lacking myself. I don't read contemporary so that's probably part of it too. If I know the genre won't interest me I don't really pay much attention to the cover. I pass them up at the bookstore. I guess when you enjoy the genre it would be different.

There is a certain sameness in contemporary covers. Contemporary romance/rom-coms in particular tends to hit the same elements: bright colors, similar fonts, characters that are stylized (often with no facial features).
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I have to admit that I dont have much of an opinion to offer here. I look at a cover then check the blurb. For me it's the blurb that makes me read it and I often don't worry about the cover. It is always nice though when a cover is pretty. Cosy mystery covers tend to be good 😂
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
