The stage play "The Confession Musical" was adapted from Beverly Lewis's New York Times bestselling book series "The Heritage of Lancaster County" by Emmy-nominated screenwriter Martha Bolton. A young Amish girl named Katie Lapp learns that her parents have been hiding the fact that she was adopted. Katie chooses to look for her biological mother, breaking the laws of her Amish community and risking being shunned. Her affluent biological mother, Laura Mayfield, who is fighting a condition that might claim her life, starts looking for her long-lost daughter to leave her money before it's too late. Her greedy husband, Dylan (John Schneider), who schemes to seize her riches, is secretly working against her. They strive to derail Dylan's scheme and reunite Katie and Laura with the help and prayers of her Christian maidservant (played by Chonda Pierce).

Beverly Lewis's work came to my attention when I received the incorrect book, The Covenant, from a now-defunct book club in 2002. I decided to keep the book rather than return it. Then I read it and fell in love with Beverly Lewis's Amish tales. Soon after, I went to a Barnes & Noble (unfortunately, this particular store is no longer in business) and purchased The Heritage of Lancaster County Trilogy, on which The Confession Musical is based. I don't recall rereading the novels, but I remember them well to this day. The theatrical musical combines the three books into a single narrative and mostly succeeds.

Since this is a "musical," the cast sings original songs; while none of these songs particularly jumped out to me, they were appropriate for the narrative being conveyed. I'm not a fan of plays or musicals, so I won't comment on the acting except to note that some of the performances were a little overacted. Overall, I enjoyed The Confession Musical, but being the bookworm that I am, I believe the novels to be superior. Nevertheless, if the musical is playing in your area on February 20, I definitely suggest going to see it. ╌★★★★✰
