[Blu-ray Review] - Twist (2021)

Why do movie studios keep modernizing classic novels? Seriously, I'm getting sick and tired of it. Then, again, at least it isn't another straight-up remake. Despite my dislike for this trend, I put aside my bias and watched Twist on Blu-ray a few nights ago. As you might have guessed by the title, it's a modern reimagining of Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist

Twist was written by John Wrathall and Sally Collett and directed by Martin Owen. Oscar-winner Michael Caine and Game of Thrones's Lena Headey receive top-billing. However, Raff Law is the real star of the film. He plays Twist, an orphan graffiti artist who gets involved with a street gang led by Fagin (Caine). Rounding them out is Red (Sophie Simnett), Dodge (Rita Orca), and Batesey (Franz Drameh). At first, the weird group of misfits feels like the family Twist has always wanted, but then he learns that a mysterious enforcer named Sikes (Headey) is the mastermind behind Fagin. With the police hot on his trail, Twist must pull off a big heist to save his new family.

Saban Films was set to release Twist in theaters in 2020 but got pushed back to 2021 because of the ongoing pandemic. Lionsgate Home Entertainment released the film to DVD and Blu-ray on September 28, 2021, with one featurette - The Artful Dodger: Twist's Underworld.

Final Thoughts

Twist puts an intriguing "twist" on the classic Oliver Twist tale. However, the film failed to impress me thanks to chopping editing, bland cinematography, uninspired music, and questionable directing. The cast is exceptional in their roles. Well, maybe not Noel Clarke, but I don't want to get in a conversation about the actor.

The film tries too hard to be a stylized-like Guy Richie action flick with a weaker script and a lower budget. Like I briefly mentioned, I didn't like the soundtrack. The music didn't match the movie's tone.

Overall, Twist is entertaining at times, but once the credits roll, you have already forgotten what you've just watched.
